District Showdowns, Must Wins and the Rest of Week 9
Week nine is upon us as in the home stretch for the high school football season. Teams are jockeying for playoff position and with only a few weeks left, games are becoming must wins for each squad.
Joining me as always is Derek J. LaRiviere, and we will be breaking down the week nine slate, which will see a district matchup with playoff implications.
Game of the Week: Hernando (3-3) at Central (4-3), 7:30 p.m.
Aiello Jr: Central, 17-14
LaRiviere: Central, 28-21
Derek’s Breakdown: Many, including myself, were shocked at the ability of Crystal River last week to slow down Central star De’Vonta Smith. Although the senior eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark for the second straight season, he was held to only 91 yards on 28 carries. With Smith being contained, QB Izzy Zena tossed five interceptions. On the other hands, Hernando QB Scott Bierwiler had the best passing game of his career in a win over Weeki Wachee last week. It’s difficult to believe that Smith will be held under 100 yards for another week, and his success should spark the Bears.
Danny’s Breakdown: Plain and simple, the loser of this game is all but surely dead in the waters as far as a Class 5A, District 7 playoff spot is concerned. This game is a lot more complex with Hernando boasting one of, if not, the county’s best defense. Central will counter with De’Vonta Smith, the most talented back in the county. This could be a dogfight, but I think the Bears have a bit more firepower to squeak out with a victory.
Byes: Crystal River (4-3)
OVERALL RECORDS (LAST WEEK) : Aiello Jr: 10-2 (66-24), LaRiviere 10-2 (69-21)
