4 Charged in Brutal Slaying of Elderly Clearwater Man
CLEARWTAER – Over the last few days, four suspects have been arrested in connection with a murder out of Clearwater Florida. Currently, 19-year-old Gaetano Keiran Powell Spera, 18-year-old Jonathan William Nelson, 27-year-old Alex Trovone Richardson, and 19-year-old Excel Lawson are all behind bars at the Hernando County Jail – held without bond.
Today a press conference was held in Clearwater, revealing the identity of the victim, and heinous crime the four suspects are accused of committing.
The following is a full report provided by the Clearwater Police Department:
On Jan. 9 at 10:59 p.m., Clearwater Police responded to a disturbance at 20000 U.S. 19 N. (South Gate Mobile Home Park). Upon arrival, officers observed damage to a window as well as an open door to lot #715. Officers conducted a welfare check inside the residence and found 82-year-old Allen Usher in his bed, with an apparent gunshot wound to his head.
Clearwater Police homicide detectives responded to the scene and initiated a homicide investigation based on evidence observed and recovered from the scene.
On Jan. 10, detectives received information that the suspects responsible for the murder of Usher were possibly from Hernando County and had conspired to commit the crime for more than two weeks. Detectives from the Homicide Unit, Vice/Narcotics Unit and Intelligence Unit as well as deputies/investigators from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office coordinated their efforts to further identify the suspects responsible for the murder.
The investigation revealed Usher was specifically targeted by the suspects. The investigation revealed the suspects conspired to commit an armed robbery at Usher’s residence for specific items believed to be money and prescription narcotics. Further evidence was developed supporting the fact that the suspects conspired to shoot the victim if he intervened with their criminal plan.
During the course of this complex investigation, multiple witnesses were developed and interviewed. Evidence from the crime scene was located in Hernando County, supporting the belief the suspects traveled to Clearwater to commit the crime and returned to Hernando County.
On Feb. 4, detectives were able to secure Pinellas County arrest warrants for all four suspects for first-degree murder.
On Feb. 5, Clearwater Police homicide detectives as well as deputies and detectives from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and Brooksville Police Department located and arrested Richardson at his place of work in Hernando County as well as Lawson from his parents’ residence in Hernando County.
Spera and Nelson are currently incarcerated at the Hernando County Jail awaiting trial for an unrelated armed robbery of a 7-Eleven in Hernando County. They now also face a first-degree murder charge.
The victim’s family provided the following statement due to the fact they could not be at the news conference:
“On behalf of our family, we would like to thank the Clearwater Police Department as well as the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office for their tireless efforts to apprehend the parties involved in this heinous crime. We truly appreciate all of the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in this case.
The grief we feel is overwhelming. Words cannot begin to express the extent of our anger and sorrow at losing our dad and grandfather to such a violent crime. We hope that these arrests will ensure no other families have to suffer similar tragedies.
We are confident that the Clearwater Police Department will follow through and ensure justice is served and that the responsible parties are punished to the FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW!”
