Another Central High School Bomb Threat Investigation Ends in Arrest

UPDATE: 1:23 P.M. – The Sheriff’s Office just released the following detailed statement:

On 04-16-18 at approximately 3:30 p.m., Hernando County deputies received at least two complaints regarding a person threatening to set off an explosive at Central High School.

The individuals who notified the HCSO had been playing an on-line trivia game application called “Game Show.”  During the game, a comment was posted on the messaging screen by a player with the username of “Nidolabz.”  The comment was, “I am going to set off an explosive at Central High School, spring hill florida tomorrow.”  Other players took screenshots of the comment and notified the HCSO.

Deputies responded to Central High School to meet with Administrators regarding the incident.

Having only a username of the person who posted the comment, deputies immediately contacted Crime Analysis for assistance in identifying the suspect.

Crime Analysis Manager Peggy Brooks conducted extensive research and was able to link the username of Nidolabz to a student at Springstead High School.

Deputy V. Mascitelli and Lt. J. Drewal made contact with the student at his home.  While on scene, deputies searched the home of the student, nothing out of the ordinary was located.

The student then told the deputies that his friend, Jonathan Cunningham, is the person who utilizes the username in question.

Deputies responded to the home of Cunningham.  Upon interview, Cunningham admitted to making the threat, saying it was only a “joke.”

Deputies placed Jonathan Chris Cunningham W/M DOB/06-26-2001 under arrest on the Felony charge listed below:

–         Intimidation, Write or Send Threats to Kill or Injure.

Cunningham was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center, then transferred to the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) in Ocala, where he remains.

Deputies also conducted a search of Cunningham’s residence.  Again, nothing out of the ordinary was located.

It should be noted that the FBI received notification of the threat through internal intelligence gathering.  The FBI contacted the HCSO and was also in the preliminary stages of deploying manpower and electronic resources to Hernando County to assist in the investigation.

Resources from the FBI were cancelled due to the quick action and response from the HCSO.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis said, “There is nothing funny – or cute – or cool – about threatening violence, regardless of the intention.  Parents, teachers, and students need to have open and frank discussions.  They need to talk about the foolishness and stupidity of mentioning such things as –bringing a gun to school or threatening to set off a bomb.   Many young people do not understand the emotional and financial cost to the community of these intentionally false reports.  Unfortunately, these criminal charges will also forever change the life of the suspect.  The only effective deterrent will be positive peer pressure.  Fellow students must, for example, talk about how idiotic and foolish it is to even consider making such statements, even when those statements are supposedly made as a cruel “joke.”

In an abundance of caution, a large team of deputies performed a sweep/search of Central High School early this morning.  Nothing out of the ordinary was located.

ORIGINAL REPORT:

BROOKSVILLE – Just as one bomb threat investigation is brought to a close, The Sheriff’s Office opened a new investigation last night, after someone posted a threatening message that they were going to “blow up Central High School today.”

Sources say the statement was posted on an “app” and the Sheriff’s Office began investigating the threat, and quickly made an arrest.

This message was sent to Parents and Students this morning by Central High School Administrators: Last night, a Springstead High School Student was arrested for making a bomb threat against Central High School. Following an investigation by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the threat is not being regarded as credible, but are performing a campus sweep at this time in an overabundance of caution.

The Sweep should be complete shortly.

The Sheriff’s Office has not commented on the situation at this time, but says a media release is forthcoming.

We will bring more on this story if new information develops.

  • For all those saying “The apple does not fall far from the tree” “Blame the parents” ect…..I happen to know this young man and his parents. His parents are fantastic parents, very very involved, the kid is in college courses in high school in the IB Program and has an almost 5.0 GPA. Extremely intelligent young man. While what he wrote is completely idiotic and unacceptable in today’s society due to all of the school shootings that have occurred, what we have not seen is the context that prompted this line of text in the app. Was he talking with friends and repeating something he heard?, was he answering a question about what the recent false threats said in the call? We do not know the conversations leading up to this line of text that got him in so much trouble. This is going to be a big life lesson to him and a first hand introduction into the American judicial system. If he did write it as a joke….then he does deserve to be reprimanded for his actions. However, Parents…..It could happen to any of you with children. I am sure you all think you are great parents, and you may be….but every child will make a mistake at some point in their life. Your’s are no exception.

  • Very well written update Tom, I give it 4 stars rating, just know I rarely give anyone a 5 star because I feel there is always room for that last star of improvement. No one is perfect, there are people out there that think they are but are sadly mistaken.
I don’t understand today’s children, What is it going to take for them to understand the seriousness in making the bomb threats or other threats to harm another human being?I would have thought that the girl that made the threats before that’s facing adult charges would have been everyone’s wake up call. Wake up and see the seriousness before you ruin the rest of your lives over a stupid joke that you think is funny. IT”S NOT! You will not get away with it the HCSO will locate you.

  • It’s long past time that we DEMAND that parents start taking their jobs seriously. If you want a piece of furniture, go buy a chair. If you think you want a child, raise that child, communicate with that child, and discipline that child. Don’t leave it to their own devices. Speaking of devices: PUT DOWN YOUR DEVICES and become the parent that you are supposed to be. I don’t really blame the child as much as I do the parent. Maybe the parent should do time along with their child. Maybe then they’d get to know each other a little better. This crap MUST STOP!

  • The Apple does not fall far from the tree, parents are probably idiots themselves or just do not take time for their children and have their phone up their rear just as the kids do and do not put in the time to truly be a good role model. Technology was always better used as a tool and not a toy. Ponder that!

    • For all blaming the parents, yes their are bad parents, with thst said, it is also about choices . He is Not a child, and defintely should be held accountable for his poor choice. I don’t know him or his parents, Until the justice system starts treating those that create the terror that this entails like the big boys it will most likely continue. Punish him as an adult along with the 17 yr old girl that terrorized the school for days. Again choices people , I am quite sure Jeffrey Dahmer’s parents didn’t teach him to eat people at the dinner table .( I am quite sure I will be bullued for the comparison) Kids torture animals, bully other kids into suicide, etc. How is posting threats, wasting hcso money and resources and FBI standing by any different? Gets away easy with this, what next?

  • I’m not sure if people realize this or not but it takes a tremendous about of resources when one of our teens acts in such a way. This not only taxes our Sheriffs department but also takes away form other real emergencies. I don’t understand our teens today. Are our parents so distracted that they can’t keep track of what their kids are up to? When mine were younger my wife and I always made it our business to check to see what our kids were up to. There were no boundaries and any communication device whether it be a cell phone, computer, ipad or the whatnot..None of those were off limits to our review. Their friends were our friends and we knew them all and these simple checks promotes ACCOUNTABILITY and that’s whats lacking today. Parents just assume that their kids would never do that sort of thing. Wake up parents! If you don’t know about it than most likely they are up to something!

  • What are these kids thinking? This is a way to get attention,Find a productive way. Make you parents, family and friends proud to say they know you. You just screwed up the rest of any future you might of had. Smarten up this is either going to ruin your future or possible get you killed for stupidity. If you do not want an education then don’t waste the teachers time or ruin it for someone that actually want to be there to learn. smh…

  • I just saw this email come across my phone. I never received a phone call from the school district stating that there was another bomb threat. I called my son’s school at Central High School for Discovery Academy the lady who answered had no clue what was going on never even heard anything and said there was no sweeping of the grounds to her knowledge. She said I knew more than she did. I just now called the school board’s Office and left a message for the media response representative letting her know that I never received word of any type of threat towards my son’s school lack of communication here from school district. This is very upsetting thank you for letting us know Tom.

      Tuesday, 17 April 2018, 6:29 pm
    • The school district has an app(HCSD Mobile) that distributes this type of information right away. The app gave me notification of the threat first thing this morning before my kids even made it to class.

  • Most people anymore should really not breed you obviously don’t know how to raise your spawns correctly

    Tuesday, 17 April 2018, 9:52 am
  • BTW, congratulations HCSO, you’re on a roll, keep up the good work. It no longer matters whether it was a credible threat or not…they still deserve to be arrested and prosecuted. That needs to be the standard on these offenses these days. Don’t do the crime, if you can’t do the time…

    Tuesday, 17 April 2018, 9:44 am
  • Unbelievable…not that it happened, but because it will continue to happen with this generation of spoiled, self entitled brats that’s coming through the public schools nowadays. What’s unbelievable is the fact that they are truly stupid enough to think they will get away with it. Such screwed up kids…smh.

    Tuesday, 17 April 2018, 9:39 am
    • And to think they will be voting… that’s really scary..
