Arson Suspect Attempts Suicide Prior to His Arrest
BROOKSVILLE – On Sunday June 14th we broke the news of a fire that severely damaged the Lake Lindsey United Methodist Church on Lake Lindsey Road.
Investigators immediately suspected that the fire had been intentionally set and their suspect was not far away. As a matter of fact, the man accused of setting the fire, 24-year-old David Wayne Willmott was seen talking with firefighters immediately after their arrival.
According to reports, investigators tried to conduct an interview with Willmott at the scene of the fire but he declined to answer questions. Without a confession, authorities could not charge Willmott until they had enough evidence to request a warrant for his arrest.
Later that evening, Willmott attempted to commit suicide at this Inverness home, by ingesting and excessive amount of prescription medications. Willmott was transported to Citrus Memorial Hospital where he was medically cleared and later transferred to a psychiatric facility under a Baker Act.
Yesterday, Willmott was taken into custody and booked into the Hernando County Jail on one count of Arson. He remains behind bars on a $25,000 bond.
