Backfiring Vehicle Leads to High-Speed Pursuit of Suspected Gunman
PASCO – Law enforcement in two counties were involved in the capture of a suspected gunman, after the man fled from Pasco Deputies earlier today.
According to sources, just before noon this morning, Pasco County Deputies were conducting a traffic stop in the area of Bowman Road and Caufield Road, when the sound of gunshots rang from the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect led Deputies on a pursuit into Hernando County, northbound on US-41, where the suspect vehicle drove off the roadway near Wilson Blvd. Deputies deployed K-9 and stopped the suspect from fleeing on foot. There are unconfirmed reports that the driver and one other occupant have been detained.
It was later determined, according to officials, that the sound of gunfire was actually the vehicle backfiring as it sped away.
It is unknown at this time what led to the traffic stop or why the suspect fled.
There are still two active crime scenes on US-41 and at Bowman Road and Caufield Road, where the intersection is closed at this time.
We will bring more on this story as it develops.
