Be on the Lookout for Scam Artists and Vehicle Burglars

HERNANDO BEACH – The Sheriff’s Office is reporting separate incidents that have residents on Hernando Beach on edge and wondering who they can trust.

According to officials, just before 5:00 pm. Monday, a couple living on Minnow Creek Drive in Hernando Beach, were approached by a man claiming to be Security System Salesperson.

When speaking to the wife, the male advised he worked for “GE” and asked several questions about the couple’s current security system. At no time did the male identify himself and even though he was wearing a name tag, the wife was unable to read or remember the information on the name tag.

During their conversation, the man advised he could provide a new security system for $50. When speaking to the husband, the male advised that he was “working on behalf of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office” in reference to recent vehicle and residential burglaries in the area.

When the couple became suspicious of the male, he advised that “he had other houses to visit” and promptly left the area. The couple called law enforcement to file a report but by the time they arrived the man was nowhere to be found.

According to officials with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, they do not solicit, nor do they “partner” with any individuals or businesses selling security systems or any other product.

In a second unrelated investigation, officials are asking for your help in identifying a suspect in a string of vehicle burglaries that occurred on Hernando Beach between Monday February 1st and Tuesday February 2nd.

The video clip below shows the suspect walking on private property near a vehicle.

If you have any information regarding these investigations, contact the Sheriff’s Office at 352-754-6830.

  • From what I have read, the population in Hernando beach is quite small, just over 2000 people. It would be my recommendation that everybody, & I do mean everybody in the Hernando Beach area, whether it be North, Central or South, get together and become united, &, if you don’t have one already, design a very vigilant Neighborhood Watch system. Some people say that it’s not necessary, and my reply to that is… Until it happens to you or your loved ones. Strength in numbers.

  • They are at it again, July of last year a man and a woman said they were selling GE security systems. The woman said they parked at the Glen Lakes shopping center and were walking the area selling GE systems. Glen Lakes is over 5 miles from where I spoke to them. The woman of the team gave me a number to call, so I called the number and some woman answers with a hello but did not mention a company name. I asked her about her company but she did not tell a company name only the names of the door to door sales people and her company was located in Brooksville in the same plaza as Big Lots. There was no security company located in that plaza. So I did a reverse look up of the number and it comes back to a cell phone located somewhere in the Spring Lake area. I had a sheriffs deputy come out and they drove around the streets looking for them and found them without a permit do do any door to door sales. I never did see them again in Royal Highlands. I believe there is a team of thieves operating in Hernando county

  • Tom, can you give some identification of the male in your story? It would be extremely beneficial to everyone so as we all may be on the lookout for him or possibly them.

  • Madea’s sister, was this guy Caucasian, black, Hispanic, or what? We should all know so we all may be aware.

  • Made as sister, your daughter did excellent. That was quick thinking however, this scum bag left without a trace. That means he is still out there, or maybe there there is more than one, who knows. They will certainly not go back to your daughters house, lol. Very smart girl.

  • Oh Please, I would only hope this scum bag would come knocking on my door. I have 2 very effective alarm systems, ADT and RUGER. It will be up to him which one he would like to choose. No questions asked. That is how you have to deal with POS’s like these. If they have the balls to knock on your door then we should have the balls to put a stop to their crimes.

  • This is the same scumbag who paid a visit to my daughter’s house over on Linden Dr. in Seven Hills next to the YMCA. She was home alone with her kids. This pc of scum knocked on the door and said he was from the electric company. She did NOT open the door. She did ask him to identify himself. And he said the exact same things to her when she grilled him for information. She asked him what electric company and the idiot said GE. She knew then something was wrong. She told him she did not call the electric company, that everything was just fine. She then asked him to leave her property. He responded with the statement that he noticed she had an ADT sign on the property, and asked her if her alarm system was working properly on her house. She told him that was none of his business, and again ordered him to leave. He didn’t….he just stood there with his backed turned so she couldn’t see his face and the security camera couldn’the pick it up either. He then said he’d be more than happy to check her alarm system. By then, they had 911 on the phone, and she set off the alarm on the house on purpose. She told this scumbag now are you happy? It works just fine. She told him the cops were on their way, and he better get going, before they would be putting him in a body bag. Still with his back turned, he walked off her property, (via the driveway just like this video) and down the street. He is seriously scoping out which houses have security cameras and alarms. So residents BEWARE of this p.o.s.

    Wednesday, 10 February 2016, 9:37 pm

    Wednesday, 10 February 2016, 7:51 pm

  • NEVER, under ANY circumstances, provide information to ANYONE that would compromise the security of your home, if the person in question doesn’t have credentials. Ask to see a license, a badge, and call the place they claim to work for to confirm. Otherwise, you’re asking to get screwed.
