Bomb Threat Closes US-19, Port Richey

PORT RICHEY (PASCO) – Last night, RNRF received dozens of photos and video clips from viewers who were concerned over heavy police activity in the area of US-19 and Fox Hollow Drive.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies responded to Jo Ann Fabrics, located in the Home Depot Plaza, after someone called in a bomb threat to the business. As a precaution, US-19 was shut down in both directions while deputies searched the interior of the business. Deputies eventually determined that there were no explosive devices and the scene was cleared.

  • Amen EJ. Not to mention if any type of bomb went off the ammount of distraction, commotion and eventual accidents that would have occured on US 19. We dont need to criticize law enforcement but yet be thankful. Kind of sad people know this much about bombs anyway! Get a life!

  • Considering the LEO did not know the magnitude of the potential explosive, they were right to be extra cautious and close the road and the entire plaza.
If there was a bomb and people were injured, you would be complaining that they didn’t take the threat serious enough and did not do enough to protect the public.
Its better to be overkill with the unknown, rather than overkill in the clean up of bodies, Don’t ya think?

    • they didnt shut down a road they shut down an entire highway far off. I helped set up pyrotechnic displays many years back as a side job. The explosives needed to blow up and level an entire shopping plaza and continue on through the the parking lot and blow up cars on us19 would of had to been professional and massive in size. Why I said tactical nuclear attack.. You must watch too much hollywood bc that level of devastation would be intense and some how I dont see people sneaking a massive bomb bigger than the door frame to the fabric shop inside with out drawing some attention..lol You have low and high explosives. low being things like flash and black powder and high being things like lead azide, mercury fulminate, and tetrazene. Youve got your boosters and charges. I understand there are shock waves also. The amount of explosives needed to cause such a problem to affect us19 fatally even considering flying debri from the determined location of the plaza would of combined been the size of a box truck brought inside the store.. The amount of man power, time, effort, and money into something like that wouldnt even begin to be rational or logical. Again too much time watching tv on your part. I get clearing out the store and the parking lot but an entire major highway system? I worked at applebees a long time ago and a jolted x boyfriend of a waitress put a fake bomb inside the bathroom and called it in. The parking lot wasnt even cleared out but times have changed obviously.

      • Nowhere does it say what KIND of bomb was threatened. There are lots of bombs besides conventional. Biological, chemical, the home brew type used in Boston with ball bearings. You’re right, it probably, if one had gone off, made it that far but do you want to be the one sitting on 19 when it goes off and find out the hard way that while the concussive properties may not have harmed you but the biological agents, chemical agents or shrapnel did? Is it overkill? Probably. But as they say: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Additionally, had this been legit and the PCSO hadn’t closed 19, the backlash for not protecting the community towards the SO would have been tremendous. Just let the men and women in uniforms do their jobs and be thankful they are there to do it.

    • By that theory they should have evacuated several square miles. The reality is that, if someone actually plants a bomb that they want to go off, they don’t then call in the threat to prevent it. If they had second thoughts and decided to report the bomb, they would say exactly where it was so there would be no need for the “Easter Egg Hunt.” Shutting down a 6 lane highway was WAY OVER THE TOP

  • This action was not necessary, levels of threat should have been applied here,,,,, over kill

    • I think they were just protecting the public. These days, nothing is “overkill”

      • shut down an entire highway based on a distant possible explosive? Did the caller call in a tactical nuke attack? What if they found something like a make shift pipe? would the entire county be on lock down? It was slightly over done..
