Brake Failure Cause of Early Morning Rollover Crash

SPRING HILL – An elderly man is recovering at a local hospital this morning, after the vehicle he was driving overturned on Deltona Blvd.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 72-year-old Thomas Bernard Mulhearn was traveling southbound, approaching Forest Oaks Blvd, when his brakes failed – causing him to veer away from stopped traffic.  As a result, Mulhearn’s vehicle overturned in the northbound lanes and came to rest against a lawnmower and store front sign.

Fire Rescue extricated Mulhearn from the heavily damaged vehicle and he was transported to oak Hill Hospital for treatment.

Mulhearn was cited for having defective equipment and failing to provide proof of insurance.

  • Hawkeye, my point was how would you know your brakes are defective until they stop working? Nobody drives a car not knowing if it will stop when you need to. Spontaneous mechanical failure is not anyone’s fault, therefore it’s ridiculous to write a ticket for it. Now if you drive on bald tires and skid into somebody, that’s your fault.

  • Prayers to this man for a speedy recovery. Honestly NY has a great thing it’s called inspections. I’ve seen many cars on the road honestly that I feel shouldn’t be on the road. In my opinion he was probably insured just didn’t have his insurance card. As far as his brakes failing maybe he just had them done ? A man of that age knows when there is an issue with his car, and he veered off the road to save others from his issue.

  • Cited for having defective equipment? Since when is your brakes failing a crime? Did he with malice aforethought drain his own brake fluid?

    Wednesday, 19 August 2015, 2:23 pm
    • Actually yes… Operating a vehicle with defective equipment is a citable offense.
Its a safety issue, not a criminal thing. That’s why people do not get arrested for it, just cited.
