Football returned to Hernando County albeit in preseason form last week, but this week the slates are wiped clean and the stats are real. I will be joined by Derek J. LaRiviere each week, where we will break down the game of the week for Hernando County and pick the rest of the schedule. So without anymore pleasantries, welcome to Pigskin Prophets.
Game of the Week: Central at Springstead, 7:30 p.m.

Aiello Jr: Springstead, 28-3

LaRiviere: Springstead, 21-7

Derek’s Breakdown: Springstead has struggled mightily in its past two games. Granted, they were both exhibitions, but losing to Anclote (63-32) and Hudson (14-12) will never instill confidence. The Eagles have always been sound fundamentally, avoiding turnovers and penalties. Coach Mike Garofano will have to get that discipline back if Springstead is going to be competitive this season. The Eagles have won eight of the past 10 meetings in this rivalry, winning by an average of 27-10. Central RB De’Vonta Smith and Springstead QB Jordan Wright should both weigh heavily on the results Friday night.

Danny’s Breakdown: While Springstead lost in preseason last week, their defense showed vast improvement from the Anclote game last spring where they allowed 63 points. That being said, only scoring six points is a recipe for disaster in football. The burden of the offense relies on QB Jordan Wright and he has the talent to lead his offense up and down the field. If he can get going, the Eagles will be dangerous. Central comes in under second year coach Chris Sands and talented RB De’Vonta Smith, however, the question is how far Smith can literally carry the team. The Bears defense is improved, but it will be up to Smith to have a big night if Central wants to knock of the Eagles.
