  • the only reason for the confederate flag…(still has America’s stars and stripes on it ) was to differentiate the north and south in battlefields so the soldiers on both sides knew who they were fighting…..and didn’t harm anyone accidentally…..

  • Why am I not surprised to see Jason Sager riling up the pro-confederate flag people? Glad I wasn’t up there for this…..

  • Protesting by burning a Confederate Flag does as much to teach humanity as shrimp on a tread mill.

    Sunday, 28 June 2015, 2:02 pm
  • So the protesters lie about why they are coming , typical of trouble makers. I am a northern transplant but am proud of the southern heritage, it’s a way of life, I have been here 12 years and am proud to be in this community.

  • When you ask yourselves “what the heck is wrong with our society today?”, look no further than these total idiot, race baiting, hate generating useless nut jobs that are a drain on our system, coming to town to create trouble that wouldn’t have existed without them, Damn good thing they came or who knows how many lynchings they would have done at the courthouse this week or how many slaves would have been sold this week in Brooksville!! Great job Bozos!! Oh my word, the racism that would have happened if you didn’t come here to preach about racism and keep reminding people that they are different. This is a town where we don’t do that and we conduct ourselves as “people” without telling ourselves we are different.

Now when you ask yourselves “what is right with our society today?”, look at the great people that weren’t going to allow this race divisional crap to go on in our town. You have restored my faith in society!!!!! You should be very proud of yourselves.

All you race baiting morons who insist other people should feel guilty for being born white and should feel automatically oppressed and bitter for being born black, think of the following when you’re ready to spew you hatred and class warfare next time. Rev Dr King is famous for dreaming of a world where people would be judged by the content of there character rather than the color of their skin, right? Well how the heck is that ever going to happen with you stupid idiots making a living off telling black people we are different and that white people are evil oppressors who are keeping you down because of crap that happened genorations ago?? Do you sleep good at night knowing you are perpetuating that crap? You should be put in jail as racists and then, by your own logic, it would make sense that we also jail all you descendants for the following generations to come as well for what you did trying to spread this crap and keep racism alive. WAKE UP AND ALLOW SOCIETY TO MOVE FORWARD!!!!

    • I think I would like to have a dialogue with you, but it is difficult to get through the name calling. If you really think this is a discussion worth having, could you try rewriting your message in a more civil manner?

      Tuesday, 30 June 2015, 11:02 am
    • Uh, you’re flying the flag of state’s legislatures who said crap like this, so, you have zero credibility.

This is from AL. If you need more, reply or stop being lazy and read.

Upon the principles then announced by Mr. Lincoln and his leading friends, we are bound to expect his administration to be conducted. Hence it is, that in high places, among the Republican party, the election of Mr. Lincoln is hailed, not simply as it change of Administration, but as the inauguration of new principles, and a new theory of Government, and even as the downfall of slavery. Therefore it is that the election of Mr. Lincoln cannot be regarded otherwise than a solemn declaration, on the part of a great majority of the Northern people, of hostility to the South, her property and her institutions—nothing less than an open declaration of war—for the triumph of this new theory of Government destroys the property of the South, lays waste her fields, and inaugurates all the horrors of a San Domingo servile insurrection, consigning her citizens to assassinations, and. her wives and daughters to pollution and violation, to gratify the lust of half-civilized Africans.

  • Once again, you did a good job of reporting on this subject Tom… Thanks for keeping us informed.

    Sunday, 28 June 2015, 9:25 am
  • A lot of fractured history there, Tom. The civil war was about trade, not slavery. I wasn’t till well into the war that Lincoln freed the slaves in an effect to cripple the southern economy.
I personally see the flag as standing for Independence and a right to be free of an oppressive US government.
The sociology student studied SOME Sociology. She missed the parts about authority bias and fractionalization. The institutions generate fractionalization in an effort to maintain control. They can keep us fighting with each other while they steal us blind

    Sunday, 28 June 2015, 8:44 am
    • Uh Dennis, the war was all about slavery. This was Jeff Davis to congress in 1858: Nothing about trade, in 1861 tariffs were at their lowest since 1816, but you already knew that…

It seems now to be probable that the Abolitionists and their allies will have control of the next House of Representatives, and it may be well inferred from their past course that the will attempt legislature both injurious and offensive to the south. I have an abiding faith that any law which violates our constitutional rights, will be met with a veto by the present Executive. – But should the next House of Representatives be such as would elect an Abolition President, we may expect that the election will be so conducted as probably to defeat a choice by the people and devolve the election upon the House.

Whether by the House or by the people, if an Abolitionist be chosen president of the United States, you will have presented to you the question of whether you will permit the government to pass into the hands of your avowed and implacable enemies. Withoutt pausing for your answer, I will state my own position to be that such a result would be a species of revolution by which the purposes of the Government would be destroyed and the observances of its mere forms entitled to no respect.

  • Enough it does not matter what it color, country or state a person is from.A flag, gun, race, sex, monetary stance, cohabitant or belief will always cause some problem or issue. Just as a pencil on paper, fingers typing on a is to blame for spelling a word wrong. It will never end so do the best that you can to be kind to the person standing in your presence no matter what they have done.

  • The protestors that came to Brooksville today are not only anti-confederate flag but also Anti- American. Sam McCall reported The Uhuru Solidarity Movement stated that “both the Confederate and the United States flag represent slavery, genocide and bloodshed.” If the people of Brooksville had let them burn the confederate flag today, who is to say they would not try to go after Old Glory next.

If the protestors had come to Brooksville only to rally that black lives matter, they would have been met with support. Spend some time in Brooksville and you’ll find blacks in this community are our friends, neighbors and our family members. We believe all lives matter!

But that’s not what USM was here for, they can try to backpedal but they will still be met with opposition after what they have done.

I hope our ELECTED community leaders take note of what happened today. Heritage Not Hate. Your constituents are speaking; Can you hear us?

  • FUNNY THING…. A SOME OF FOLKS THERE THAT ARE ON CONFEDERATE FLAG SIDE ARE THE AWESOME PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTY THAT HELPED REPAIR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CEMETERY, AS FOR THE MORON THE AMERICAN FLAG WAS ALSO APART OF THOSE FOLKS DEMISE IN THE 1920’S/30. THE INCIDENT AT THE CHURCH UP NORTH WAS CAUSED BY ON EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED YOUNG MAN
THE CONFEDERATE FLAG IS A PART OF SOUTHERN HISTORY SADLY SLAVERY HAPPEN UNDER THE FAG. THE AMERICAN FLAG HAS A HELL OF A LOT MORE WRONG DOING OF HUMAN RIGHTS UNDER ITS WATCH. YOU CAN’T CHANGE HISTORY, BUT WE SURE CAN STAND STRONG AND OVERCOME OUR FAILURES. WITH GOD AND US STANDING TOGETHER WE CAN WIN THIS BATTLE. DON’T GIVE IN TO THE TRASH IN OUR GOVERNMENT THAT IS USING US FOR PATSY’S
    WE ARE GOD STRONG

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 10:41 pm
  • The battle standard of a unit that fought (and failed) to leave this country, should never be allowed to fly over any government building in any state in these United States, but the right of an individual to personally display that flag as part of their heritage should never be hindered.

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 10:39 pm
  • The Confederate Flag had nothing to do with that Scum that shot the people in the church. He had a mental disease try opening more mental facilities. Quit filling these kids up on all sort of psychotic drugs and help them instead of sending them back out in the streets. Look at the real problem and stop using our ancestors and our Flag as a scapegoat.

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 10:21 pm
  • I love my hometown of Brooksville, Florida. As a native Brooksvillian, born and raised, you sent these outside agitators right back home where they belong. To come into our town and burn a Confederate flag to disrespect the residents of Brooksville, who can trace their family lineage back to members of their family who served in the Confederacy, is wrong. I say this as an African-American veteran who loves our American history. Thank you again for sending these bastards back home with that nonsense.

    Job well done Brooksville.

    God Bless America

  • Way to go Brooksville, Ole Bettjo could not cause racial unrest here. She and her minions slithered back to Tampa as the viper she is, wicked ole bat.

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 10:11 pm
    • No, I am still here. I am not going away. I have lived here for 10+ years. I was married at the Brooksville Courthouse. And let me tell you what slithers. Racism slithers like a snake through our community. And like a snake it hides in dark places and white people forget it is there. (that is called “normalization”) Saturday, a small group of peaceful people caused that snake to rear its ugly head. Silent Racism is silent no longer in Hernando Co.

  • I must say that the 13 states that wanted to leave the union did so because they wanted to keep the institution of slavery….in the 1920’s and 1930’s Brooksville is said to have been the lynching capital…..now seriously, I’m sure that there were racist individuals in every community then and there may still be now. The facts of this matter are simple. We were not the ones who fought in the Civil War, we were not the one’s lynching nor being lynched in the 20’s and 30’s, but we are however the ones living in present day. Yes Dylan held a confederate flag prior to shooting those innocent people in the church, yes he is white and they are black, yes it angers us all for our different reasons….now does burning the Confederate flag solve the problems in society today? No….does becoming even more divided solve any problems? No!!!!!! What WE all should be doing as current day people living and coexisting with each is to stop and sit down together and come up with ways in which to enrich our lives and for those of you with children, their lives. Spreading hatred has already gotten this world into a big enough mess….it’s time to make a difference that is positive for us all.

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 9:40 pm
    • Brooksville Fl was never the lynching capital of anything. Can you please site your source for your statement? I will be happy to site my source for the lynchings per capita and while Florida ranked high on that list, Hernando County isn’t even listed in the top counties for lynchings. Here is my source and be forwarned the photos are horribly graphic. I myself am a transplanted yankee as many in Florida are and while I don’t love the Confederate flag, I also know that a piece of fabric is neither to blame nor will getting rid of it improve anyone’s life one iota. Education (free to all) Hard work (there for anyone motivated enough) and a determination to change are the only things that make a difference. Mea Culpa. Live by it.

  • Tom, Great Reporting!
To bad the racism protectors do not understand that the Democratic Party has done more to oppress the cause they are fighting for than anyone else. Rev. Al, Jesse and Deray the paid arms of Obama and George Soros did not show up, wonder why, no national TV and enough businesses to burn down.
The young lady who studied sociology better go back to study some History as she does not have a clue on what is going on beyond what her progressive-liberal professors lied to her about.

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 9:33 pm
    • Sounds like you need to go to school. Perhaps you know about Teddy Roosevelt? Or how the racists left the democratic party in 63 when they supported civil rights.

      Thursday, 2 July 2015, 11:36 pm
  • I am very disappointed in your very one sided reporting. 1 interview with pro-flag and 4 with anti flag. Crowd was appx 80-100 pro- flag and 12-14 anti-flag, So you interviewed 1 to 1.5 % of pro-flag and 30 to 35% of anti-flag. Sounds slanted to me.

For record I am a northern transplant of 8 + years, served 22 1/2 in the military and my Great Grandfather served with the 1st Delaware Vol during the Civil War.I proudly have his discharge along with my own, so if there is a question I will be happy to show it to anyone.

The flag for the record is not the flag of Confederate States of America, but the flag of a military unit. I have the flag from my unit after it was disbanded. It is a unit that served in Europe during WW 2. When I display it does that make me anti German?

I took Painting in college. That no more makes me Rembrandt or Van Gogh then makes someone who took Sociology in school an expert on race relations. Oh by the way I took Sociology in college also.

There are race issues in America. Fanning and throwing gas on them by the media does not help!

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 9:29 pm
    • Perhaps you would enjoy the real history of the confederate national flag, this quote from its’ designer:

As a people we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race; a white flag would thus be emblematical of our cause.
      —William T. Thompson (April 23, 1863)

      Thursday, 2 July 2015, 11:22 pm
  • I was robbed in Brooksville where I work by a black man….He was never caught. So am I supposed to hate all black people in Brooksville? That was only a few years ago, not 90 years ago!

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 9:28 pm
  • The confederate flag was the symbol of the 13 states that wanted to leave the union. Its a sign of pride, hope, and belief thats what it stands for. Im proud to be from the south and sorry the small minded people dont understand its not a racist thing. We as modern day people turned it that way. The swastica was a religious symbol until Hitler made it something else. Evil people with small minds.

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 9:18 pm
    • The “confederate” flag in its current form never symbolized the 13 states that wanted to leave the union. It was the battle flag of Northern Virginia and was used in one battle. It became popular to fly this version of the flag after the Brown vs. The Board of Education verdict, which made desegregation of schools the law of the land. So please tell me again how this flag is your heritage.

      Tuesday, 30 June 2015, 10:25 am
    • The flag, to people who know their history, is disgusting. This from FL in 1861:

“At the South, and with our People of course, slavery is the element of all value, and a destruction of that destroys all that is property. This party, now soon to take possession of the powers of the Government, is sectional, irresponsible to us, and driven on by an infuriated fanatical madness that defies all opposition, must inevitably destroy every vestige or right growing out of property in slaves.

Gentlemen, the State of Florida is now a member of the Union under the power of the Government, so to go into the hands of this party.

As we stand our doom is decreed.”

There is no reason to suspect this war was about state’s right’s, it’s simply a myth.

      Thursday, 2 July 2015, 11:20 pm
  • Sad that there is so much energy wasted on a stupid flag.

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 9:01 pm
    • That’s right, this flag is a pathetic symbol of heritage. It is one of slavery. If you don’t agree, you’re calling Jefferson Davis and the southern leaders (Not Sam Houston) liars.

Mr. Davis: It seems now to be probable that the Abolitionists and their allies will have control of the next House of Representatives, and it may be well inferred from their past course that the will attempt legislature both injurious and offensive to the south.

This and tons of other source documents, along with the absence of any data about “state’s rights” dispels that myth. There was no amendment calling for states rights, other than to protect and expand slavery.

      Thursday, 2 July 2015, 11:33 pm
  • Owning a confederate flag does not make you a racist no more than guns shotting on it own nor a knife stabbing someone on its own there is one theme behind this humans a stupid boy held the flag before he took a gun an killed 9 people

    Saturday, 27 June 2015, 9:00 pm
    • You’re right that the dude who killed 9 people was a nut. But there are lots of people flying a slavery symbol around here who don’t know their own history. Perhaps you think the southern states were lying when they said they were seceding to preserve slavery. Or that Jefferson Davis and his VP were liars too. This post from the First Alabama seems to sum things up pretty well.

Yeomanry. Loyal Southerners. Come to Your Country’s Call!

To put down TREASON and REBELLION and hand down to our Children, unimpaired, the Rich Legacy of the Glorious Union achieved and sealed with the blood of our forefathers.

      DO NOT CAST YOUR LOT
      WITH THE REBELS.
The secessionists, the flatlanders, the planters, the so-called gentlemen whose fine daughters do not acknowledge your existence would have you fight their RICH MAN’S WAR. If you join their rebel army it will be a POOR MAN’S FIGHT.

TROUBLESOME TIMES IN ALABAMA FOR UNION MEN.
Loyal Union men of good moral habits – farmers and farmer’s sons – are now joining THE FIRST ALABAMA UNION CAVALRY, UNITED STATES VOLUNTEERS. Our flag is THE OLD FLAG. Our country is in peril and needs men of valour to fight for Freedom and Uncle Abe.

Muster rolls are open at secret sites in Winston, Franklin, Marion, Blount, Morgan, Randolph, Walker, Jefferson, St. Clair, Lawrence, Fayette, DeKalb and Jackson counties.
