Controlled Burn Causing Heavy Smoke Across Hernando County

HERNANDO – You have noticed heavy smoke billowing across Hernando County today, but there is nothing to be alarmed about.

According to officials, The Florida Forest Service is conducting a 1,000 acre controlled burn in the area of CR 480, East of Trail 11A in Citrus County.

This burn is being conducted for fuel reduction and ecosystem management, say officials.

  • For those who think extra fuel is gas or diesel, that is not what they are referring to. Fuel is the combustible material on the ground ie brush limbs leaves pine needle ect… They burn this off to reduce the chances of a wildfire starting. They also burn in blocks. The block they were burning is large. These are controlled by fire lines to prevent spreading. Although it is annoying it is needed. So suck it up and thank those firefighters for keeping us from looking like California.

  • They should do these controlled burns in the rain to control the smoke. Lololololol💪😃💪😃💪

  • That wasn’t a controlled burn. Guiness Book of World Records was in town. I won the record for the world’s biggest marijuana cigarette ever smoked.🎄🎄🎄

  • Wrong time of year to do this… Fog is heavy we don’t need the extra smoke stop it with this b******* all you do is cause accidents there was an accident on Shady Hills Road this morning because the fog was so thick couple years ago they had a controlled burn that spilled over onto I-75 and there was a massive pileup that killed 10 people we don’t need this

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 10:10 pm
    • The smoke on I75 was a wildfire not a controlled burn

  • We live in a county surrounded by state preserves. This isn’t news. But I get it, you got to reassure the mindless people that live here.

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:09 pm
  • Is there a list of dates and locations of when and where the controlled burn sites are?

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 7:54 pm
    • Forestry service used to podt on federal land burns…maybe the FWC page.

      Friday, 9 February 2018, 3:00 am
  • What a bunch of whiners you all are! Maybe they should leave all that fire fuel so we can become a tiki torch like California. Then you’d all be b!tching because they did nothing…smh

  • Hey let it grow so when we get a real fire these people who don’t understand can find out…..How would they tell us? What if they did and wind changed and you stayed in with windows shut you would complain about your inconvenience.. If it wasnt for Tom we wouldn’t know. 💩 like everthing else around here…… Have great evening 🎻🍷

  • Amazing, brunky, and iceman. Notice is given on web site and social media outlets. You not seeing it or failing to remember seeing it is not our responsibility. Amazing, bring your animals inside for goodness sake. Brunky, you didn’t need to cancel your golf game, play another course. Iceman, how many windows does your house have. You make it sound like it takes hours to open and close the windows.

    • I you read the article you would see that, they are doing it for no reason. They are doing it to burn extra fuel that they don’t need. In other words they are wasting fuel and causing problems for people for no reason

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 8:40 pm
      • Burning for “fuel reduction” is a forestry term that means to burn off undergrowth and all those dead leaves on the forest floor.
Are you trying to be funny…you failed….or are you just that plain dumb.
Here is a clue, anything that can burn in a wildfire is “fuel”. Therefore to remove tge extra burnables is fuel reduction.
You are living in a state that is roughly 70% rural and forest.
This burn was up in the Withlacoochee Forest…..so the controlled burn would be supervised by state and federal biologists and rangers.

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 3:08 am
      • IceMan, it is patently obvious from your statements you really do not understand that “extra fuel” means anything that can burn such as leaves, or stuff left from Irma last fall… having a buildup of “extra fuel” can lead to horrible wildfires.. look at the fires in California last fall as a prime example.
perhaps if you read off this link it might help you understand better and then you would not make such blatantly ignorant comments..

    • Poor Me, I guess you have time to sit and check everyone in the states social media web sites???? With that much smoke we should have gotten a notice by mail!!!! Common sense was lacking, You don’t do a controlled burn on a windy day or that much acreage at a time!!! …. “hours to open and close windows” People think before you post! Comments like these make you look like so intelligent.

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:42 pm
      • Amazing, without a shadow of a doubt you have to be the dumbest self centered uneducated moron on the planet…..do you really rhink the wi d had kicked up before the vurn started……so tell me dimwit do you ecwn know the normal florida wind patterns? As both a sailor and a native I do….do yourself a favor quit complaining…it is done and over with…..

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 2:56 am
      • Iceman and amazing, please stop complaining. Close your windows, use your air conditioning and relax. You will be fine. If your symptoms get worse go to the hospital.

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 8:00 am
  • Was wondering what it was! Thanks Tom for the heads up.

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 3:57 pm
  • The heavy smoke is also making it into Pasco County. Guess the winds are bringing it. Neighbor stated that husband was on County Line Rd. and visibility was almost none. Glad to see Florida does this though. Otherwise we’d be on fire like California has had. They don’t do these kind of burns. Helps to prevent fires and spreading. All is good.

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 3:44 pm
  • This is absolutely ridiculous!!! 1,000 acres in Citrus county. I’m in Spring Hill. I can’t breath. I have asthma There is no common sense here. My animals outside are rubbing there eyes. We should have been warned and so many people have respiratory infections right now. If someone knows please tell us all departments that would have approved such a mass amount of burning at one time. Thanks. We all need to call and complain.

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 3:30 pm
    • oh please..shut your windows.. and NO you do not need to be notified.. Obviously you need to change your meds.. Controlled burns are done prevent worse fires like the ones in California.
ALL you need to do is stay indoors and let your AC filter do its job..I never even noticed it allday I just tought it as a bit foggy all day… It wasn’t until I went out on the patio I knew it was a controlled burn.
Sigh, those burns are normal and approved on the state level.

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 6:48 pm
      • Mr Alpha Papa know it all!! Some of us have health issues and with the wind today, common sense would tell you is not a good day to have a controlled burn and they could have done it in smaller acreage amounts at a time so it didn’t send smoke two counties away! Common sense was lacking. Furthermore, maybe you should change your meds to a medication that makes you think before you speak/type.

        Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:22 pm
        • Amazing, the state does not control the wind. Most likely when the burn was started the wind either was low, or from another direction. Get used to the burns. Between now and June is the time the state does them.

Hahahaha, telling me to think before I type good one from a self absorbed human who has no knowledge of dick. Let alone how the forestry service works. Your psuedo logic is petty self centered and stupid.

Remember those horrifc fires in California. They were so bad because dickwads like you complained in The same way….so no controlled burns… we are in fire season. If you don’t like how we do it here by all means move back to wherever you escaped from.

I am sorry for your self inflicted health issues….but what will you do if we get a lightening started fire? Call mother nature and whine like a 2 yr old? Fires are common this time of yr and only get worse until the rainy seasonstarts in June. It is what it is….you live in a state that is 70% rural and forest. Suck it up buttercup or move.

          Friday, 9 February 2018, 2:50 am
          • Does Alpha Papa stand for Diarrhea of the Mouth… Note in my comments to much wind and to large of an area. Therefore, this caused to much smoke. I have a mild case of asthma and it caused me to have an attack. I have never smoked to cause my problem and I’m not an old person. You are a mentally abusive person by your replies back to people and a know it all that assumes way to much. Also I’m not a complainer. I’m stating common sense facts!!!! Pleas note I never said they shouldn’t do controlled burns. You twisted everything I said. They might have a communication 101 class you could sign up for at the college!

            Sunday, 11 February 2018, 12:53 am
            • Really, are you still whining… why do you live in a climate that is bad for asthma then?
No one is being abusive but you are excessively whining.

If you don’t like it, move. There will be more of these burns as the forestry service removes excess fuel prrtially caused by Irma.

IF you only have “mild asthma” then WHY do you expect to be notified. Notify services are for ppl with serious illnesses…not “mild” ones… Changing you story I see.

You just don’t like being inconvenienced.
Not matter how much I try to explain the why of it all to you…that is not enough. Because you think the world should revolve as round you and your wants…suck it up. Grow up…either endure, like we all do, the occasioanl smoke day or move back to wherever it is you escaped from. You don’t habe to live here you know. We all share this planet with each other. Wherher it is plant or animal.
Controlled burns help keep the forest a safer place.

One can only wonder at the whining you did during Irma. Smh….

              Sunday, 11 February 2018, 8:52 am
  • Thanks I can’t breath. How about a warning next time. My afternoon golf is cancelled.

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 3:25 pm
  • So basically they are doing it for no reason. Yeah great. Now we have to close the windows and make sure we don’t go outside until the smoke clears. Nice job guys.

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 3:13 pm
    • Not true… controlled burns burn off the brush and other things that make a wildfire worse.. take a look at California..years of no controlled burns because of ppl like you.. at a huge lost of homes and wildlife… further, when the forest floor is cleared off new growth comes in pretty much within days. Oh gosh, you have to close the windows… poor thing, exercise will harm you..

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 6:50 pm
      • It’s not summer time. There are no forest fires now idiot. And if you read the article you would see that, they aren’t doing it to prevent fires. They are doing it to burn extra fuel that they don’t need. In other words they are wasting fuel and causing problems for people for no reason

        Thursday, 8 February 2018, 8:38 pm
        • Actually we are in our normal fire seasin
, now to june when the rainy season starts.

Hahaha, well I can tell you are not a native. Florida is pretty much dry from late october to early june. The worst tines for wild fires is spring…controlled burns are a common method of cleaning up the land to prevent worse fires. Further any number of plants do better after a fire. We did them on the ranch durung the dry season. It is called being a good steward of the land. Something you transplants don’t understand. I am pretty sure someone like you has never heard of the Florida Wildlife Corridor, or would have paddled the Keys back country.

You really are not terribly bright are you? The article was crystal clear, but it just went right over your conehead…..smh

          Friday, 9 February 2018, 3:22 am
        • No, apparently you do not understand.
First, the fire season is right now to mid june when the rainy season starts. Anything on the forest floor that can burn is called fuel. Pls reread what I wrote above.

          Friday, 9 February 2018, 10:02 am
        • Did you think they were burning off surplus diesel or gas??? LOL. Google controlled burns in Fla.

          Friday, 9 February 2018, 2:24 pm
      • “poor thing exercise will harm you” ??? You start out acting like your a know it all in your comments and then you make yourself look like you’re an immature juvenile with your last comment.

        Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:31 pm
    • Where would we be without complainers?

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:09 pm
      • And…..even when it is explained why to them they complain…good forbid the state actually does its job.
Retirees are a pain in the backside.
