Crash Kills Two in Citrus County, Alcohol Not Ruled Out as a Factor
LECANTO (CITRUS) – A horrific crash claimed the lives of two people last night, and officials aren’t ruling out alcohol as a factor.
According to officials, around 9:30 p.m. 22-year-old Trevor William Clements of Crystal River was driving his 2006 Jeep eastbound on SR-44, when for reasons unknown, he crossed the median near CR-491 and overturned.
At the same time, a motorcycle occupied by John McKenzie, 53, and passenger Brenda McKenzie, 46, of Crystal River was traveling westbound on SR-44. In an attempt to avoid a collision, John McKenzie dropped the bike – causing fatal injuries to Brenda McKenzie, after she was struck by the motorcycle. Brenda died at the scene and John was transported to Bayonet Point Hospital, where he is listed in Serious Condition.
Trevor Clements was reportedly ejected from the Jeep and sustained fatal injuries – he also died at the scene of the crash. His passenger, 22-year-old Eric Selke of Citrus Springs was transported to Shands Hospital, where is listed in Serious Condition.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
