Deputy’s Quick Response Thwarts Carjacking Attempt
SPRING HILL – Thanks to the quick response of a Hernando County Sheriff’s Deputy, a carjacking suspect was captured in the act and taken into custody on Thursday.
According to officials, Deputy William Harsanyl was dispatched to the Speedway gas station located at 3495 Deltona Blvd, after reports of a suspicious person who was throwing items around the store. Prior to Deputy Harsanyl’s arrival, the suspect pushed a female victim away from her white Kia Forte and entered her vehicle without permission.
Deputy Harsanyl arrived just in time to order the suspect out of the vehicle, where he was taken to the ground and placed into custody.
Deputy Harsanyl notes that the suspect, 35-year-old Andrew Thomas McCarty claims that he was being chased, and that his intent was to steal the car to get away from the scene.
McCarty is charged with Burglary, Battery, and Resisting Arrest. He remains behind bars at the Hernando County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
