DEVELOPING: Two Young Children Airlifted After Near Drowning – UPDATE

WEEKI WACHEE – Around 6:30 pm, RNRF received unconfirmed reports of two possible near drownings at the 5400 block of Darlene Street.

Sources tell RNRF that a one to two-year-old child was discovered floating in a body of water and was not responsive. An off duty EMT who was visiting the home was able to resuscitate the child.

We soon learned that a second child, around the same age, may have suffered a near drowning at the same location.

Both victims were transported to a landing zone at Weeki Wachee Christian Camp, where they were airlifted to an area trauma center.

RNRF is waiting on word from officials, regarding the condition of both victims.

UPDATE: According to Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson, Denise Moloney, the two children injured in the Saturday’s boating accident have been released from the hospital and are not expected to have medical issues from the incident.

Moloney says there have been no reports of the boat being operated in a reckless manner, despite some witness accounts. “…one party in the boat stood up, causing the boat to shift, and the two small children to fall out,” according to Moloney.

  • Not everyone that rents the boats are ignorant of safety with children, etc.I think this was due to poor parenting because as a caring, concerned parent myself I have taken my girls out on those canoes but with life jackets & with me at all times and watching everything around us.I am extremely cautious around water.

  • I hope the parents get a huge fine for unsafe operation of a boat ,in a no wake zone . and another fine for kids with no life jackets . and bayflight , the hospitals , fire department and all other first responders place a lien on the parents ,for all the costs associated with this.

these were criminal incidents ,from what I hear and the parents need to pay for it. and the driver of the boat needs to have their rights to operate a boat terminated for good.

and Jolene,,their isn’t no alarms or safety nets on a river. just stupid ,irresponsible boaters, and kayakers. half of them under the influence. It gets worse on the Weeki every year.

the kayak and canoe rentals are out of control , with the mass majority of them with little to brains or experience.

and the majority of the motor boat renters from the local marina are even worse.

tougher restrictions need to be set in place . I’m personally getting tired of all the fools on the river

  • Jolene, don’t be so quick to pass blame. My two year old nearly drowned and it was NOT due to no supervision. There was a pool fence but it was open because a lot of people were over. With all the eyes around she STILL fell in. Accidents happen. Prayers go to the families of these children.

  • This is such a tragic accident..there are more and more drownings in children. My prayers go out to the family ..there’s an amazing swim instructor in weeki wachee , she teaches kids from 6 months and truely is a god sent in what she does. . absolutely a must now days with children that live with a pool. In a matter of days children are already learning to self rescue. I highly recommend her..I just hate to see accidents like this..please please see Brigitte with Aquaminnies. ..
