Elderly Man and Toddler Struck By Vehicle – Driver Fled the Scene

SPRING HILL – An early morning stroll nearly turned tragic for an elderly man and his 18-month-old great grandson, after they were struck by a pickup truck while crossing Hearth Road and Mariner Blvd.

According to the child’s aunt, Amy Pasquince, round 6:50 a.m., 77-year-old Jose Nieves-Paneto attempted to cross Hearth Road while pushing a stroller occupied by his great grandson. As he stepped onto the pavement, a late model, dark colored 4-door pickup truck, possibly a Chevy Silverado, turned left onto Hearth Road – striking them both. Pasquince says the driver stopped and checked on them, but then quickly jumped back into his truck and sped away – turning right on Lamson Ave.

Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported the victims to a local hospital. Although battered and bruised, Paneto and the child were not seriously injured.

If anyone has information on the whereabouts of this driver, contact the Sheriff’s Office at 352-754-6830 or Virginia Townsend at 813-716-3181.

  • Thank God they’re okay, thoughts and prayers to the family. I hope they catch the hit and run driver…and please, people, don’t try and cross Mariner on foot…it’s just too dangerous, especially pushing a stroller. I don’t think there’s a crosswalk there at Hearth and Mariner, but even if there was there’s no guarantee you will be safe. The roads in Spring Hill are very dangerous with all kinds of bad drivers; you take your chances just traveling by car, let alone by bicycle or on foot. Many drivers don’t look, are distracted or just careless.
