Elderly Wrong-Way Driver Arrested for Driving Under the Influence
SPRING HILL – Age is no factor when it comes to arresting drunk drivers and an elderly woman found that out the hard way after she was stopped for driving the wrong direction on a Spring Hill Drive.
Deputy Ryan Brown responded to the area of Spring Hill Drive and Mariner Blvd early Sunday morning, after receiving reports of a reckless driver. Brown says he observed a Hyundai sitting at a red light in eastbound lanes of Spring Hill Drive but the vehicle was facing westbound. Brown made contact with the driver, 77-year-old Janice Carlton, who appeared to be under the influence. Brown says Carlton had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.During an interview with Carlton, Brown Says she admitted to consuming four drinks, so he conducted a series of sobriety exercises, which she failed. Carlton was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence and transported to the Hernando County Jail.
Carlton is free on a $1,000 bond.
