Familiar Face to Challenge Incumbent Commissioner – Will Debate This Fall on RNRF

HERNANDO – As RNRF gears up for the County’s only REAL political debate, so are candidates who are bidding for seats on the Board of County Commission and School Board.

Last week, RNRF caught up with Republican candidate for the District 2 County Commission Seat, Charles D. Greenwell, where he was meeting with patrons and soliciting signatures from registered voters at a local restaurant.

Greenwell, a Kentucky native and retired attorney spent a few minutes with RNRF discussing his background and platform for the upcoming election.

Greenwell is a familiar face among commissioners, where he often chimes in on several issues before they go before a vote.

Greenwell says, “I’ve become increasingly concerned about the gap in information between the career staff and our board of commissioners.” Greenwell voiced concerns over the Sunshine Laws that prevent commissioners from being able to meet and discuss issues, prior to voting on vital subjects that effect the entire county. Greenwell explains, “They get the agenda packets and are briefed by the Administrator on Thursday, and then go to vote by Tuesday.” Greenwell wants to see more time allotted for commissioners to have discussions on agenda items, rather than rushing to make a decision. “Where is your leadership taking you, where do they want you to go, and more importantly, where do you want to see this county go,” says Greenwell.

I asked Greenwell what more could be done to attract industry and create jobs around the Brooksville – Tampa Bay Regional Airport.  Greenwell, a former pilot, explains that our control tower is feeding off of the Tampa system. “We’ve got a top-notch facility and we have a control tower that is professionally staffed, but you have a plane coming in and its flying IOS on the Tampa system, and our controller grabs the binoculars on final approach. That is a piece of the puzzle that needs to be solved as we move forward,” says Greenwell.

Greenwell will take on incumbent Wayne Dukes this fall and will go head-to-head at the RNRF Great Hernando Debate on August 2nd.

  • Went to this guys website to discuss some issues in the county especially involving traffic and this super high volume housing they want to build off of Northcliffe Blvd. His site has a popup saying that he will respond within 24 hours. 4 weeks later, still no response. I guess he has no plan for the county. I was looking forward to change, but can’t even get a generic “thank you for sharing your concern…” type letter.

  • This guy is a joke. I met him and the fair and never met someone who wanted to solicit a signature become so abusive. He claims he’s a veteran but can not produce anything to prove it other than a hat. To challenge a person you claim to want to represent when they ask for proof of who you are and the claims you make is not professional. My personal opinion, my dog can do a better job than this moron. I wonder why the Republican Party isn’t backing him. Oh yes let’s not forget he showed his true colors in front of a couple of 10 year olds. Hey Charles do you remember me? I’m going to let the county know what kind of scum you are making a 10 year old cry.

    • Not the Chuck I know. Would never make a 10 year old cry. But I guess when you’re in politics you have to rub shoulders with people like you. Innuendos come easy to people who are professional nay-sayers. Chuck has my vote.

  • I’m sure the reporter doesn’t know IOS from ILS (Instrument Landing System) but any pilot should…

  • Referencing Patriot’s comment about districts – I called to see which commissioner represents my area and was told by county commissioner’s staff that my area was split with 2 commissioners representing the separate streets in DaMac. One covered just a few streets and the other covered all the rest. Even the staff had a hard time figuring out WHERE ONE DISTRICT ENDED AND THE OTHER BEGAN ( they had such small maps to look at according to them)

    • If they told you that you had a single commissioner they lied. Our commissioners serve “at large” meaning all 5 of them represent you. There is a residency requirement that the county loves to conflate as representation. You can build an imaginary fence around district 2, the people of that district can overwhelmingly vote for commissioner “A” yet district 2 may get commissioner “B”. because of votes from the other 4 districts. Yes, this has happened in Hernando County

  • Yes, fresh blood from a professional background. Can this be the start of dismantling our current crop of self serving jerks on the county commissioners, let us pray.

  • Looking forward to hearing what Greenwell has to say. There is no doubt that Dukes needs to go. He can take Holcomb with him!

  • Anyone have any idea what he’s talking about when he refers to our airport and Tampa’s? I’m also a former pilot and have no idea what “flying IOS on the Tampa system” means. I doubt it’s a big problem.

    • Originally IOS stood for internal operating system. With invention of IPads, IPods and mobile devices it can now mean “internet operating system” or “internetwork operating system “. Google What is IOS mean on computer and more info can be found for various applications ( business, government, etc.) Hope this makes some sense to it for you.

      • What scares me more are the words ” and the controller grabs the BINOCULARS on final approach”!!!! Dors this mean they have NO RADAR to watch???? I definitely wouldn’t want to land by someone’s BINOCULAR INSTRUCTIONS.

        Saturday, 12 May 2018, 7:08 pm
        • ILS is what was meant by the reporter. ELS it’s a classD airspace 90% of them don’t have Radar. The controllers use the Binoculars to make a positive visual ID and they do it every where even at Atlanta Tampa JFK LAX so calm down and do some googling because you need it

          Wednesday, 16 May 2018, 7:40 pm
    • He must mean ILS…if he did it should have been double checked.

      Tuesday, 15 May 2018, 4:24 pm
  • you should really do a story as to how there are no ‘districts” in Hernando County. Our commissioners serve “at large” meaning they do not represent any particular district. Example, Hernando Beach can overwhelmingly support candidate “A” in an election, and yet may get candidate “B” if Brooksville, Spring Hill, and Timber Pines vote different.

Its sad that voters think they have a district representation and the current group do their best to hide the facts, just like they hide our current budget has a 5 million dollar shortfall……. SAD!!
