Fiery Motorcycle Crash Claims the Life of Spring Hill Man

HUDSON – A Spring Hill Man died last night after the motorcycle he was driving was struck by an SUV on US-19.

According to officials, 31-year-old Paul Thomas Mello was traveling southbound on US-19 in the left turn lane, north of Tower Drive. 29-year-old Donald Patenaude, also of Spring Hill, was traveling northbound when Mello pulled into the path of Patenaude’s SUV, attempting to make a U-turn. Mello’s motorcycle was struck by the SUV causing both vehicles to burst into flames.

Witnesses say the victim was dragged by the SUV several yards before coming to a stop.

Mellow was transported to a trauma center where he later died from his injuries.

Patenaude and a passenger in the SUV were not injured in the crash.

  • Paul, was my cousin, he was a good man, this accident was driver error, how could you hit something and drag it while it was on fire. What kind of influence was the driver under, that he couldn’t stop immediately. This driver MUST be prosecuted to the FULL extent of the law. This was a terrible way to die. He leaves behind 2 small sons. This is a terrible loss for the family and their lives will be changed forever. God Bless You Paul Mello. Prayers are being said not only for Paul, but also his family. May Paul rest in peace with the Good Lord for ever and ever, AMEN. Paul was an employee of the Pasco County School System and currently worked in one of our local schools.

    • Well I know Paul, the driver of the motorcycle. If you knew him too you’d know he was one of the best, and most safe rider there was…he never drove drunk and followed the traffic laws. He wasn’t reckless. He had to son’s to he lived dearly. He worked for the school board and also did charity events for children dressing up as a super hero. He’s a great man that was gone too soon. I was told the total opposite of your driver friend . I have video proof that him and the girl were laughing as well. They didn’t even try to put him out. They let him burn for a long time. And the driver was actually the dumb bitch he was with. Your boy told her to run to skinnys and made her come back after he realized she killed a man. Hope Paul gets the justice he deserves!!! #keepitmello

  • Prayers to the loved ones and families. We all need to be more careful on the roadways. What we perceive as a safe, normal everyday neccesity can quickly turn dangerous and life threatening. Do everyone a favor and be extremely patient and focus on being attentive at all times on the roadways. The life you save could be your own.

  • Joey your an ASS. not all of us are kids racing around with crotchrockets. It amazes me the stuff on here that is said about motorcyclists. Truth is most motorcyclists are killed because the driver didnt see them and they pull out in front of them. Weather they are impaired or on their phone It happens every day you ride. Alot of us riding have families and kids. Stay off your Fkn phone while driving.

    • Lol r u serious? No they are doing dumb shit. Weaving in out traffic. Then they go down the middle to get to the front then they take off to 100 in seconds. I see it with my own eyes so yes maybe 1 might be doing the right thing out of 10. But those 9 make a bad name for the others. Just how it is.

    • It’s not just kids on crotchrockets…. My mother was involved in an accident a little over two years ago where a 70 something year old man on a motorcycle pulled out in front of her, she was able to avoid hitting him, but he ended up hitting her and sent her spinning across the median into oncoming traffic where she struck another vehicle in which a life was lost. She survived but broke most bones in her body and after over two years, 15 surgeries, life in hospitals/rehabs/skilled nursing/assissted living she still has atleast one more surgery to go… The physical injuries were horrific and are still on going but the mental ones are worse. My stomach turns when I see “watch for motorcycle” stickers because she always did that- they scared her because of their vulnerability- and one almost killed her, and did kill someone else…Motorcyclists need to take responsibility for their actions as well.

  • Not to sound mean but i drive 19 everyday and all i see are these motorbikes going in out traffic. They drive down the middle of cars to get to the front so they dont have to wait. Then they gun it at the light. They do crazy stuff. Maybe this guy wasnt but i will almost 99% he was being reckless.

    • He was making a u turn heading north on 19 and the explorer didn’t see him as they were traveling above speed limit and dragged him quite the distance. Myself and my fiancé witnessed. Besides how reckless can one be on a kawi ninja 250, I guess he’s your 1%.

      • Michelle please be persistent in reporting that to the cops.

        Saturday, 27 October 2018, 2:08 am
      • There are also witness reports that the female passenger was in fact the driver but tried to run. The male was taking the blame. Would you be willing to be a witness for Paul’s family? He left behind 2 boys.
