Firefighters Discover Children 10, 6, 2, Home Alone, Mother Left Town for Dinner

SPRING HILL – A woman faces charges of Child Neglect, after leaving her three young children home alone, while she left to enjoy a night out of town.

According to officials, Fire Rescue responded to 10127 Bedford Road on Saturday, after reports of a structure fire at the residence. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered three young children, ages 2, 6, and 10, inside the residence, without a parent or guardian.

After a search of the residence, firefighters determined that one of the children had turned on the oven, which caused a pot to catch fire. There was no damage or injuries as a result of the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office and Department of Children and Families were contacted, due to the lack of adult supervision. During the investigation, deputies learned that the mother, 41-year-old Tarsha Hite, left her children home alone, while she went to Clearwater for a dinner date. After several attempts to contact the mother by phone, Hite finally answered, but refused to return back to the residence, right away.

At the conclusion of her date – 2 ½ hours later – Hite finally returned home, where she was confronted by deputies and DCF. Subsequently, Hite was placed under arrest and charged with 3-counts of Child Neglect. She is currently free on $6,000 Bond.

It’s not known if the children were taken into protective custody or turned over to a family member.

  • She was out on a date to get a daddy for #4, this way she gets more food stamps and welfare

  • There is no way she should have left her 10 year old in charge of 2 younger siblings at 10. And seriously way out of town like that.. That’s just totally irresponsible on her part. I could never do that to my children.. That’s way to much responsibility to put on a young child. I don’t care how responsible he/she is. I wonder if the mother asked the older child if they wanted that responsibility?? I bet not. That was just plain not using her brain…?

  • Give her a break, surely that is her last date.

The only reason she was able to get a date because the guy was blind.
now, that’s what I would really call a “BLIND DATE”

  • Two hours later? It depends on the traffic and where in Clearwater this mother was. South beachside and Spring Break and winter visitor traffic. It takes time to pay a bill and travel back to Spring Hill. Two hours is not unreasonable for a person to get back from a dinner in Clearwater. The mother and her date would have been in trouble if they jumped up and left without paying their bill, and for speeding if they hauled ass back to her kids. This mother maybe shouldn’t have left the 10 year old in charge, I don’t know, I don’t know them. This is not the first mother to do this, but, due to the fire, she got arrested for leaving these kids alone.

  • At 10 years old, I was babysitting for a police officers kids while they were out for a much longer time then this mother was. Florida has no law as to how old a child must be to be left alone. It all depends on the maturity level of the oldest who is left in charge. I’m not sure these charges will stand up in court but they have cost this mother money and her reputation.
I’ve also seen stories like this twisted in reports. There were two DCF workers in this county who used to leave their own kids alone when they were about the same age as the oldest. One was in charge of DCF and the other one ended up slapping a kid so hard it broke an eardrum that the kid had to have surgery for. No charges were ever brought against those two. Selective enforcement, I’m just saying.

  • 3 kids. I wonder how many fathers??????

    Tuesday, 15 March 2016, 7:07 am
  • Really, 2,6,&10. Cops call you and you tell them you will be there when you’re done with your date, or what ever the f**k it is your fat a** was doing, and come home 2½ hrs later? You pos! She should not have got a bond just for the fact that she did not head back the moment she was notified of the situation. I mean, your kids caught the stove on fire, or a pot, whatever, and your first concern isn’t getting home to your children who are probably scared and frightened over what’s going on to comfort them… Smfh. SHAME!SHAME!SHAME on you!

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 8:11 pm
  • Thank goodness that the children are ok. Here is a link to DCF where you can read accurate info in regards to the age a child can babysit.

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 7:59 pm
  • Looks like she could miss a meal or two. 10s too young to babysit especially a 2 year old!

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 7:45 pm
  • Watched my younger brothers when I was 10 and my folks had to be away from the house. Had the fire department and police numbers handy. I knew what to do if necessary.
I knew what bed time happened to be if they were late.
That’s fifth grade. Come on folks. Get reasonable.
A mother is going to know if a particular child can handle the responsibility.
Somebody knew how to call the fire department and did it.

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 5:05 pm
  • I wonder what she ate?

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 4:31 pm
  • OK so let me get this right, she wouldn’t come home right away because she was getting some poontang, then she gets arrested and posts a $6000. Bond which at 10% is $600. So, the judicial system should be ashamed of themselves. If that was a grandchild of the judge my bet is that bitch would not have gotten bond at all.

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 3:35 pm
  • We will see if DCF does their job and this thing shouldn’t be out eatimg she should say no to eating

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 1:31 pm
  • Whatever the reason, this is a cry for help child welfare should remove those children and then commit this person,no contact with these kids. Because she got caught this time leaving them alone, how many times has she done this, and what about the future.

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:35 pm
  • Wow I’m sorry but when you become a Mom, your first priority if no other parent is your children. Your time for a significant other is when you have proper supervision. Those poor kids.

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:34 pm
  • Shawn, I don’t care what state you’re in. A 2 and 6 year old with a 10 year old watching them is too young. This woman should have been put in jail with no bail until they found a safe place for these kids. Then let her out, but don’t give her kids back !! She doesn’t deserve them !!

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:34 pm
    • Oh I’m not saying its ok, just saying, by Florida law, she may not be charged!

      Monday, 14 March 2016, 4:28 pm
  • Really?!? Piece of s#!$. Choosing a date over her kids?!? Take away her kids and place them in a loving home.

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:33 pm

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:30 pm
  • No there is no set age its up to the parent to judge if the children are mature enough to be left alone,im pretty sure 6 and 2 are clearly not able to take of them selfs and 10 is risky, she is a fat nasty p.o.s and hopefully they put her in prison for awhile and she never has these childelren in her care again

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:25 pm
  • probably out makin mo babies….

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:24 pm
  • Refused to come home? Are you kidding me! Piece of $%&#!!!

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:06 pm
  • I’m not sure that will hold up in court. When our kids were younger we often asked what age could be left alone and what age could babysit etc. Always got the answer of Florida has no set age. Shes a real winner for not coming home, but not sure there was a actual crime, sadly.

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:04 pm
    • I was told that children under that age of 13 are not allowed to watch their siblings. Although that same 13 can babysit for someone else’s children.. This information can from DCF. This is to enforce parents not leaving their children home a lot…SMH

      Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:20 pm
      • Florida has no set age. The issue was that a fire had started and that gave the probable cause for the charges. Parents are responsible for the actions of the minors up until 18 or other legal proceedings like emancipation etc. An attorney fresh from passing the bar could get these charges easily dismissed. This woman made a bad decision and hopefully makes better choices in time. More than likely she was charged under 827.03

        Tuesday, 15 March 2016, 6:57 pm
  • This story speaks for itself, this dumb *** has no business with children, take them now so they have no influence from her.

    Monday, 14 March 2016, 12:02 pm
  • i hope the “date” was worth it!
