Girl Beat with Studded Belt, Forced to Wear Chastising Shirt, Mother Charged
HERNANDO – On Friday, deputies responded to West Hernando Middle School, after administrators contacted authorities regarding a possible child abuse case.
According to a heavily redacted arrest affidavit, an unidentified female student arrived at school, wearing a T-shirt with scolding statements written in black magic marker on the front and back. The only words provided by officials were “___ grades and ___ not being allowed to have a boyfriend.” It also indicated for people to “Back Off” and not help or (the victim) would get another “good whoopin as___ did last night.”
While interviewing the victim, deputies noticed several bruises and belt marks on her arms, shoulders, wrists, neck, back, and legs. The victim claims the night before, 31-year-old Melany Joyce Alexander (Unknown Relation) beat her with a white belt that contained metal divots and holes – matching the injuries left on the victim.
The Department of Children and Families joined the investigation and determined that the marks appeared to be excessive.
Contact was made with Alexander, who was uncooperative, but she did admit to striking the victim several times, due to her failing grades.
Alexander was transported to the Hernando County Jail and charged with one count of Child Abuse. She is free on a $2,500 bond but is not to have contact with the victim or return to her residence.
