High Tides and Heavy Rains Close Pine Island Drive

WEEKI WACHEE – Heavy rains combined with a high tide forced the closing of Pine Island Drive this afternoon, leaving residence without access to the island for several hours.

Officials say a ¼ mile stretch of the roadway was covered with fast moving water, making conditions unsafe for passage.

There are unconfirmed reports that the roadway reopened minutes ago to through traffic.

There are no reports of damage to the roadway or structures at this time.
