Liberal vs Conservative, Do You Know What You Stand For?

REGIONAL – There are only a few months until the 2016 Primary Election and less than four months until we decide who will be the next President of the United States. That means voters on both sides of the aisle and those standing in the middle are preparing to cast votes for the candidates they think are right for the Country.

Immigration, National Security, and Gun Control top off the list of contentious debate; forcing the gap between the Left and Right to widen, and leaving the middle to fall into the abyss.

Earlier this week we reported the U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision to uphold a wide-reaching gun ban on individuals convicted misdemeanor domestic battery. The article drew fire from viewers who claimed the article was opinionated because we pointed out that Liberals support increased gun control.

Historically RNRF only covers politics when election cycles draw near. For example, a few weeks ago we interviewed County Commissioner Candidate Mike LaRocca who is challenging incumbent Nick Nicholson. Last week we met with candidate Justin Grabelle who is running for Rep. Rich Nugent’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Over the next few months we plan to meet with other local candidates and most likely report on issues that affect our community, State, and Federal Governments.

As a prelude to our coverage of the upcoming election, we’ve decided to provide a list of principles that each side represents. This will help individuals who aren’t quite sure where they stand, make a more informed decision before they pull the lever.

Keep in mind that Democrats generally hold Liberal (L) values and Republicans hold Conservative (C) values.

Liberals believe in large government to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all. It is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems.

For example: Liberals believe the rich should pay upwards of 90% in federal taxes, so that government can provide free healthcare, college tuition and increase the minimum wage.

Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. They believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems.

For example: Conservatives believe in limiting taxation and regulations that prevent small businesses from flourishing.

Liberal: A woman has the right to decide what happens with her body.  A fetus is not a human life, so it does not have separate individual rights.  The government should provide taxpayer funded abortions for women who cannot afford them.  The decision to have an abortion is a personal choice of a woman regarding her own body and the government must protect this right.  Women have the right to affordable, safe and legal abortions, including partial birth abortion.

Conservative: Human life begins at conception.  Abortion is the murder of a human being.  An unborn baby, as a living human being, has separate rights from those of the mother.  Oppose taxpayer-funded abortion and believe the Taxpayer dollars should not be used for the government to provide abortions.

Liberal: Global warming is caused by an increased production of carbon dioxide through the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas).  the U.S. is a major contributor to global warming because it produces 25% of the world’s carbon dioxide.  Proposed laws to reduce carbon emissions in the U.S. are urgently needed and should be enacted immediately to save the planet.

Conservative: Change in global temperature is natural over long periods of time.  Science has not shown that humans can affect permanent change to the earth’s temperature.  Proposed laws to reduce carbon emissions will do nothing to help the environment and will cause significant price increases for all.  Many reputable scientists support this theory.

Liberal: The Second Amendment does not give citizens the right to keep and bear arms, but only allows for the state to keep a militia (National Guard).  Individuals do not need guns for protection; it is the role of local and federal government to protect the people through law enforcement agencies and the military.  Additional gun control laws are necessary to stop gun violence and limit the ability of criminals to obtain guns.  More guns mean more violence.

For example: Liberals believe that if there are more restrictions on guns, the number of gun related violence will decrease.

Conservative: The Second Amendment gives citizens the right to keep and bear arms.  Individuals have the right to defend themselves.  There are too many gun control laws – additional laws will not lower gun crime rates.  What is needed is enforcement of current laws.  Gun control laws do not prevent criminals from obtaining guns.  More guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens mean less crime.

For example: Conservatives say no matter how much regulation is in place, criminals will still have guns and law abiding citizens will not be able to protect themselves.

Liberal: Global warming, not terrorism, poses the greatest threat to the U.S., according to Democrats in Congress.  Terrorism is a result of arrogant U.S. foreign policy.  Good diplomacy is the best way to deal with terrorism.  Relying on military force to defeat terrorism creates hatred that leads to more terrorism.

Conservative: Terrorism poses one of the greatest threats to the U.S.  The world toward which the militant Islamists strive cannot peacefully co-exist with the Western world. In the last decade, militant Islamists have repeatedly attacked Americans and American interests here and abroad.  Terrorists must be stopped and destroyed.  The use of intelligence-gathering and military force are the best ways to defeat terrorism around the world.

There are several websites that provide an endless number of comparisons and even one site that will allow an individual to determine exactly who they should vote for.

  • Good comparisons that hit the nail on the head for the most part. The 90% tax rate you mentioned, while supported by some liberals, is an extreme example of how over the top some of them are. Even liberals, for the most part , realize how silly this idea really is. Have to agree with the rest of your basic tenants. The attacks by the Libs to you on these comments bring to mind another hurtful truth concerning Liberals that is more of a statement that anything else. It goes “If you want to anger a Conservative, lie to him. If you want to anger a Liberal, tell them the truth.”

  • Tom, I Lost track of you for a while – glad I ran across your column again.

  • Its clear you don’t like the, facts, so you create your own. I am reminded of an article I recently read.

Of course this only applies to SOME Republicans

    Tuesday, 5 July 2016, 4:57 pm
  • where in your above article did you mention “SOME” liberals?

    Tuesday, 5 July 2016, 3:31 pm
  • You claimed liberals want to tax the rich at 90%, you also claimed Liberals don’t think the 2nd amendment gives you the right to bear arms. Both these claims are factually untrue. No impasse, you are wrong.

    Tuesday, 5 July 2016, 1:54 pm
  • Tom, Search the site “on the issues” they give great detail as to political party positions by BOTH parties. It is neither a liberal or conservative site. NASA sends spacecraft to mars but I guess they too are now a Liberal source your eyes. You made mistakes in your posting above on the issues, man up. A Mason, we have managed to pollute the oceans witch have an average depth of 2 miles with mercury (burning of fossil fuel) to a point we can only eat fish 1x a week and if you are pregnant, not at all. Your tax dollars are paying for pumps in Miami to rid the streets of high tide flooding, and insurance company’s are gearing up to cover risk that will certainly appear in your future rates.

    Tuesday, 5 July 2016, 1:08 pm
  • A mason what is your intelligent response? I have yet to see one.If we pile tons of crap into the air and water every day it will have no effect on our ecology? Is pollution good for us ? You are the childish one.Get over yourself.

  • Tom making your self look more stupid every time you post.

    Monday, 4 July 2016, 9:50 pm
  • Tom, I accept your apology in advance. I am sure you didn’t count on being fact checked. I assume in the future you will research both sides of an issue factually, and report them in that manor.

  • A liberals response to the truth:
    1. Their face turns a red/purple ghoulish color
    2. Their body starts to shake uncontrollably
    3. The hair on their arms stands straight up
    4. Their lips quiver
    5. From their pie hole spews venomous vulgar insults
    6. You see the back of their head as they slam the door behind them

    Saturday, 2 July 2016, 9:53 am
  • There is no liberal or Democratic position that want to take your guns away

There is no liberal or Democratic position that want to tax the rich at 90%

Bush left office with a 1.3 trillion dollar deficit, Obama is at 500 billion or less than half of W Bush- who incidentally was responsible for one of the largest entitlement unfunded programs in U.S history in Medicare part D- So which party gives away the free stuff?

There is no credible peer reviewed scientific publication that debunks climate change (many as per the author)

The reason the conservatives aren’t complaining is the same reason they watch Fox news. You told them exactly what they want to hear. Short on facts, with a side of red meat.

    Saturday, 2 July 2016, 7:12 am
  • Tom, the next time you write an article… can you link your sources (preferably reliable and unbiased sources)? Thank you!

    Saturday, 2 July 2016, 3:29 am
  • It’s extremely obvious this article was written by a Conservative!

    Saturday, 2 July 2016, 3:26 am
      • Tom, when you have to pare down source material, I believe it is impossible to completely remove bias. It slips in either consciously or subconsciously.

For example, your section on Global Warming comes almost verbatim from from student news daily, with only a few changes. On that site, it is entitled Global Warming/Climate Change. Climate Change is what the scientific community and liberals now call it. Global Warming is the older term that conservative tend to cling to. Was it a conscious choice to omit that?

Worse, both arguments on student news daily end with the sentence “Many reputable scientists support this theory.” However, you opted to only omit that sentence from your your liberal argument. Again, was that a conscious choice?

        Sunday, 3 July 2016, 4:13 pm
          • Again, not liberal. Also not a conservative. There are other ideologies… Since you chose not answer my very specific questions as to why you omitted particular sections from your source material, I guess I have my answer. And let’s be honest here. Removing that same line about “reputable scientists” from the liberal view, yet retaining in the conservative, changes the narrative in a material way.

As for verifiable sources, I am not the one claiming to be posting facts. I freely admit that what I provided was wordsmithed to be opinion and liberal leaning propaganda. The issue (and my original point) is it looks no different from what is in your article, thus should be in an opinion section.

            Sunday, 3 July 2016, 11:36 pm
  • CHUMP TRAIN! Tom if you can’t see the slant in your article and ask why only libs complain shows you have a problem with reality. Like Trump, you are losing it.LOOK OUT FOR THE MEXICAN AIRFORCE!!

    Saturday, 2 July 2016, 12:57 am
  • Trump Train!!!! Choo Choo!!!

    Friday, 1 July 2016, 3:21 pm
  • Tom, good article. After reading the comments notice the same libtards that always get offended by facts and they always reply with attacks. They are far gone on lala land so these people will never wake up. That’s the sad part. Tom, you will never win with these people.

    Friday, 1 July 2016, 3:13 pm
    • Agreed

      Saturday, 2 July 2016, 7:37 pm

    Friday, 1 July 2016, 2:12 pm
  • It is clear the authors position is not fact based and biased. It appears he was merely looking for support from uneducated readers. I propose to all voters to do your own research as to where each party stands on the issues using reliable unbiased sources.

    Friday, 1 July 2016, 6:35 am
  • What’s up with you ***** Haters on this article, and all the rest?! You want to criticize Tom for one (if any) spelling errors, a word or two mixed up, .. I can understand a small error correction here and there.. But as for the accusations that this piece is biased, opinion-based, and reinforceing stereotypes..really? You should be geniunely embarrassed. @wingnut @Sophia @mike. Where’s your ******* articles? So many locals, including myself, use Tom’s articles ONLY to find out whats going on in the community, and know we can rely on RNRF to have the updates, pretty much as soon as we can check them. And with detail from reliable sources, whether the information is agreeable or not to “you people”. This was an EXCELLENT article in my opinion, very informative for young voters and/or people who don’t know where the line stands who both would be well-educated on the topic after reading this piece. My point : If you dont like how he writes the articles, Dont Read Them! If all you do if talk out of your ass about this site, then obviously your one of the many frequent visitors of it. My advice: Get a life! The rest of us dont want our news updates with a negative ******* commenting. If we wanted that, we’d watch Fox.

  • over time liberals are demonstrably proven wrong on just about everything

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 1:56 pm
  • First of all, I never said I was offended. You are far from the first person to espouse the positions of other people only to misrepresent them in order to bolster your own position.
Attached is the link to the official DNC stance on guns, Nowhere does it say they want to take your guns away or that we should only allow militias’ as your high school website claims.

To pigeon hole the entire US population based on a mischaricterization of two sides of difficult issues does nothing to solve any problems. We need people who can think beyond boxes.

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 1:55 pm
  • You’d have to suspend reality to believe any “liberal” policy would work in the real world. abortion(not late term), is okay though.

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 11:07 am
  • Excellent rundown of the difference and true to my belief’s there is a big difference. I knew before reading this breakdown I knew what I was, now I am positive. No doubt I am a proud practicing CONSERVATIVE and proud of it. I enjoy your news coverage and now your articles. Thank you Tom

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 10:11 am
  • Oh boy, let see. This country has been been voting for how long now and how is that working for everyone, if one person run this country he or she would be called king or queen. Hmm lets see who i should vote for the one that talks a lot or the one that runs at the mouth or maybe the one in the middle that thinks they want to be president, im voting for we the people if there is a box the check

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 8:48 am
  • Great article

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 8:42 am
  • RNRF trying to be fox news? Just as biased and half as interesting.

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 8:12 am
  • Seems to be a gap somewhere. If Tom’s list is true, and Conservatives are generally Republican, and if Conservatives stand for lower taxes, limited government and free markets, then why is the Republican party posed to nominate someone like Donald Trump over 16 other candidates?

On free trade, he is calling for the protectionist tariffs that liberal labor unions have been requesting since the 1980s.

He said he wants to raise taxes on the rich.

He is fine with the scope of government and says it just needs to be better managed.

His view on Socialist Security is that it needs to be strengthened, not removed.

    Is this today’s conservatism?

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 8:11 am
  • Capitalistic countries with social supports have consistently higher standards of living. Voodoo economics is a myth.

We lead the civilized world in crime and shootings.

There is zero reason to believe the oil industry when it comes to global warming.

Medicare for all would save us money.

If we keep doing things the dumb way, we won’t get better. The gop is good for the uber rich and no one else.

Germany, Denmark, Australia, Canada etc. are real places. Not prefect, but they are doing much better than we are.

There is zero scientific our even anecdotal evidence to support today’s gop.

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 8:04 am
  • Tom, in the second paragraph is it, “top of the list of…,” or did you mean, “top off the list of…” ?

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 7:53 am
  • Tom, this OPINION piece is wrong. To quote student a student daily news piece 6 years old is comical. All you are doing is reinforcing stereotypes and right wing dogma. Liberals fully support the 2nd amendment.

Provide the number of reputable scientists that do not support climate change. Your piece should have pointed out that Liberals concur with 97% of climate scientists and conservatives ignore science.

How about this misleading statement. Many reputable journalists think that opinion pieces are 100% wrong.

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 7:34 am
      • see comment below

        Thursday, 30 June 2016, 1:57 pm
      • “There are dozens of similar websites with exactly the same information.” This is what journalism has come to?

Well, I can show you just as many web sites that say vaccines cause autism, aliens are hidden away at area 51 and Elvis is still alive.

        Thursday, 30 June 2016, 5:49 pm
          • Of course there is no winning! Notions of conservatism, liberalism, libertarianism, anarchism, etc. are all man made political philosophies. If Plato could not define the concept of temperance in 50,000 words, what chance do you or I have of defining these complex philosophies in 1,000?

People are unique and, at the same time, imperfect. Trying to categorize them in to a one-size-fits-all philosophical bucket is problematic, since most people carry views that are considered both liberal and conservative. For example, have you ever seen a conservative reuse his Socialist Security check?

As to your challenge, I gladly accept knowing full well the game is unwinnable. Allow me to continue your list, but using a slightly different worldview, order and word choice.

Liberal and conservatives both acknowledge the basic economic Law of Supply and Demand.

Conservative: Supply side (also known as trickle down) economics is the preferred method of creating economic growth. Reduced taxes, labor costs and regulations on those that create jobs enables the providers of goods and service to increase production. The result is more goods and services are available for consumers.

Liberal: Supply means nothing if there is no demand. The Law of Supply and Demand dictates that demand drives supply and thus true economic growth. Deference should be made to the lower and middle class with respect to tax policy and wage growth. This results in increased cash in consumers’ pockets. More cash in the pockets of people living paycheck to paycheck increases spending and thus demand. Many reputable economists support this theory.

            Religious Freedom

Conservative: The purpose of the First Amendment is to prevent government from interfering with religion or establishing a state religion. The phrase “Separation of Church and State” does not appear anywhere in the Constitution. The US population is majority Christian, and this country has a Christian heritage, therefore deference should be paid to that religion. Eliminating teacher lead prayer in school violates the both the Freedom of Speech and the Free Exercise clause of the First Amendment. Therefore, teacher lead prayer in school should be permitted and encouraged. Businesses are free to reject any customer transaction that would violate their sincerely held religious belief.

Liberal: The First Amendment builds a “Wall of Separation between Church and State”. Every citizen has the right to practice the religion of their choice (or none at all). In order to ensure that freedom, government must never favor one religion over another. Government employees must not lead prayer to a captive audience, such as a classroom. The individual should bear all responsibility and burdens of their religious choice and belief. If a business is open to the public, it must serve the public equally.

            Same-sex marriage

Conservative: Marriage is the union of one man and one woman as defined by their particular religion. Same-sex marriage is immoral and violates many religious beliefs. It is the role of government to enforce this religious view by prohibiting same-sex marriage or by eliminating civil marriage and leaving marriage to religious organizations.

Liberal: The individual has the unalienable right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Therefore, all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, have the right to marry the person of their choice. This basic right should never be ceded to government or anyone else.

I was going to add one on Feminism, but I figured the wordpress servers might crash on that one…

  • Hack. You would be perfect for Fox news.Is this your resume?

    Thursday, 30 June 2016, 2:11 am
  • Nice rundown. Most of us already know what we think and how we feel about the issues. It is also a truism that,in this election cycle, millions of voters are not going to be told by the media which ‘box’ we need to be in and which ‘lever to pull’. From the second sentence we can infer that both the Democratic and Republican parties are literally soaked and the only ‘isle’ is a non-establishment candidate….if members of both parties decide to cross the AISLE and vote for him. 😉
