Lighting, Flooded Roadways, Downed Power Lines, Plague Hernando County

HERNANDO – Law Enforcement and Fire Rescue are responding to numerous calls around the area, after reports of downed power lines, lighting strikes, flooding, and structure fires.

Just moments ago, fire rescue responded to a residence on Gatewood Ave, after and 11-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl reported being struck by lightning. Sources say the victims were not seriously injured.

Firefighters responded to the RaceTrac Convenience Store located at the intersection of Ft. Dade Ave and Cortez Blvd, after the business filled with smoke due to being struck by lightning. Source say fire was contained to an air handler but officials have not confirmed that information.

Deputies and Fire Rescue are on the scene at Locomo Skating Rink on County Line Road, after a utility pole was struck by lightning, causing power lines to fall across County Line Road. There is some road blockage in the area at this time.

Several roadways across the County are reportedly flooded at this time, due to the heavy rains.

    • I have never understood why when it is dry out that they don’t dig the retention ponds deeper . How about the County purchasing some of the vacant land and dig more drainage retention areas Seems to me it would be cheaper in the long run. Hernando County is reactive instead of being proactive. Typical Government .
