Local Woman Say She Was Nearly Abducted by Jennifer Odom’s Suspected Killer
REGIONAL – A quarter-century has passed since the brutal rape and murder of 12-year-old Jennifer Renee Odom and attempted murder of 17-year-old Carolyn Murray, and with recent news that 55-year-old Jeffrey Norman Crum may be the person responsible for the heinous crimes, peace might come to both families, knowing a monster is behind bars.
On January 16th, 1992, Pasco County detectives believe Carolyn Murray, 17, was abducted by Crum at her bus stop near US-41 and Twin Oaks Drive. Murray was dragged into a nearby shed where she was beaten, raped, and left for dead. Family members found her a few hours later and despite losing a large portion of her brain, Murray survived.
Thanks to Familial DNA evidence, linked to his son Jeffrey Crum Jr., on February 25th 2015, Pasco County Detectives arrested Jeffrey Crum Sr. and charged him with Murray’s Attempted Murder and Rape.Officials recently announced that Crum Sr. is a person of interest in the rape and murder Jennifer Odom, however, Crum has not been formally charged.
When news broke of Crum’s arrest, a Spring Hill Woman, who we will refer to as “Jamie,” says she and a friend were nearly abducted by Crum, while walking on Drew Street towards her home on Casson Street.
Jaimie says she was just 14-years-old in 1993, when a man in a blue pickup truck approached her and her friend and asked if they wanted a ride home. Jamie says they ran as fast as they could through a wooded until they reached Jamie’s home. Jaimie told her parents but doesn’t remember if her parents reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Office.
When Jamie saw pictures of the suspect’s blue pickup truck on the news, she knew that was the same man who tried to pick them up. Jamie described a younger Crum as being unshaven and having oily hair at the time of the incident – she could not remember a clothing description.
Jamie tells RNRF that when she saw Crum’s recent mugshot on the news, she said “Oh my God, I could have been one of his victims.” To Jamie, the picture confirmed that Crum was indeed the man who attempted to abduct her, nearly 25-years ago.
Jamie feels lucky to be alive today and hopes the families of both victims will find comfort in knowing Crum can no longer hurt young girls.
