Majority Say Yes to 1/2 Cent Sales Tax Reinstatement

HERNANDO – Despite strong opposition from those who say bringing back the half-cent sales tax would lead to wasteful spending, residents will be paying the tax whether they like it or not.

According to the current results of today’s special election, the yes votes have it by a landslide.
As of 9:25 p.m., according to the Supervisor of Elections 36/37 precincts confirm that a majority of voters want to reinstate the ½ cent sales tax.

We will bring more as it develops.

  • A half cent here and a half cent there, eventually we’ll be to 50% or more taxes. Oh wait, we’re almost there. You people all think on a micro level rather than a macro one. Enjoy your cake.

    Friday, 11 September 2015, 9:00 am
    • Actually, the last time I checked your tax burden is approximately 65 percent, the cost of government.

      Friday, 11 September 2015, 12:00 pm
      • Taxes depend on how much you make, spend, and whether or not you own property. I’m assuming most in the comments here are 50% or lower. Remember, it’s important to punish people who are successful so we can prop up the folks who can’t be bothered in learning anything more than what the latest Kardashian is doing. Oh wait, I forgot, it’s not their fault that someone doesn’t just give out 6 figure jobs to everyone in the country regardless of their skill, intelligence, or other redeeming factors.

    Friday, 11 September 2015, 8:22 am
  • @jana rae. Maybe you should get on your son’s rocket and fly your a** to the moon where there is no taxes or children for you to NOT worry about. @children first these selfish people only care about what benefits them and If it doesn’t make it to the schools at least we tried for our children lets push for another tax raise .

  • The 1/2 cent is for capital improvements of the schools i.e air condition systems, painting and general upkeep. If the county voters did not vote for the 1/2 cent then other things would have to be cut like, band and football and other after school activities. If the kids would not have these activities then where would they be after school. They would be doing other things which is not in their best interest or yours get the hint. You people who are against the 1/2 cent tax need a reality check after 2008 Hernando county lost many jobs and many people due to the job market disappearing which led to less taxes being paid. You over sixty Q tips don’t like it then move to Miami.(cost of living is higher there then here)You are not even going to miss this 1/2 cent and everyone pays it even the tourist passing through. So shut up and get to the earlybird dinner specials and don’t forget you are paying the 1/2 cent more on the sales tax. Hooray for Hernando Schools.

    Friday, 11 September 2015, 1:02 am
    • I’m not sure why there’s an assumption that everyone against more taxes is somehow a senior citizen. Seniors don’t pay that much in taxes anyway.

The concept that you fail to understand is that your are accepting at face value the claim that the reason they need the money is to pay for capital expenses and they somehow don’t have that money in their normal funding sources.

Then they scare you with how they are going to cut this and that service or other thing you deem important. Meanwhile they are spending a ton of money on other things that never see the light of day in front of the voters.

Every time the government asks for more money, they always trot out the most public of services that will magically have to be cut if they don’t get it. Unfortunately, a lot of people fall for it.

As for the loss of tax revenues… you do realize that the revenues are only back down to the level they were prior to the boom, right? It’s only because the county spent wildly during the high times that they are in this mess. They should have banked the extra income for a rainy day rather than spend it like a gambling addict in Vegas.

      Friday, 11 September 2015, 3:56 pm
  • My name is Elmer P Fudd. I own a mansion and a yacht. I dislike taxes but I love Springhill. Love it or leave it. Quickly.

  • I am a senior operations director at a billion dollar telecommunications company and have a good understanding of how this works. I have also researched my details. I can look at the issue objectively and without emotion. Can you? I attended school here 25 years ago, currently have children that attend school in Hernando county and I don’t believe for one second that the problem lies in the lack of money they have to spend on books or other classroom materials. It’s in the quality of the personnel working at the district and the standards to which they are held. If the county wants to improve schools, they need to take a hard look at who works there and try to attract top talent from wherever they can find it.

However, they don’t want to do that. Instead they blame the problem on books or computers or some other falsehood that you believe. The government officials are motivated to get more money. They will tell you what you need to hear to give it to them. Obviously it worked.

Perhaps instead of looking at the quantity of money that is spent, we should look at the quality of how it is spent as a whole, not just the additional revenues from this sales tax. The schools get half of all property tax revenue in this county while the other half is shared by the sheriff, roads, fire department, courts, library, etc…

You are being manipulated and misdirected to look at a small problem while the larger one remains hidden in the background. Government spends all the money when they have it and if they need more, they just ask for it. They don’t ever look to streamline their operations. You have to do it personally, I have to do it in commercial business, but the government never has to. That’s a problem.

  • Children 1st – I am truly proud you are a good parent. I know I was. But, it isn’t the issue. Where is ALL of this money actually going? I am really sick of being taxed to death. Now I agree with both Diabox and Jane Rae.

    Thursday, 10 September 2015, 4:33 pm
  • @children 1st “IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD” I knew it, I knew you were gonna throw that in the mix.well that doesn’t surprise me, as for me sitting too much with too much time on my hands fyi that is absolutely NONE of your businesd!! Glad your son is a doctor in NEW YORK,good for u. My son is a rocket scientist,my daughter is an engineer, I am currently working and walking for a cure for several diseases, my husband builds TALL BUILDINGS AND THE WHEN HE GETS THEM DONE,PUTS ON HIS CAPE AND FLYS ALL OVER RESCUE ING DAMSELS IN DISTRESS. I BID YOU ADO , and hope your brain doesn’t get too overloaded with your great wealth of knowledge and your long rants. You got your tax,now smile and don’t worry be happy. I am?

    Thursday, 10 September 2015, 4:21 pm
  • Yes I do I attended the meetings… If they have that half cent for that they don’t have to dip into the education funds for it. Which means books etc… I know my facts do u??? I also have seen the improvements in the schools last time. I actually took time to research before I voted each time. It would be nice if everyone else did before they shoot off whatever they think they know. Some schools might have benefitted more but that is because they used it where the demand was highest. U do realize that we’ve been paying this tax already in past years.

    Thursday, 10 September 2015, 1:18 pm
  • Well you are agreeing with her but that is my point also. I never said its the job of school to raise our kids!!!! U should go back and read my comments. She just took something I said and ran with it in wrong direction. My oldest son is a dr in New York an my middle schooler is already studying to be a nurse so I agree with you. All I wa saying is that it helps when our kids have enough books, space, teachers, and after school activities so they know how to cope in the real world not just th world at home. Have u ever heard the saying it takes a village to raise a child???? There is a lot of truth to that!! When I was going to school the day didn’t end when the bell rang. To get into college they want to see extra activities etc. Like I also said there a millions of children that are in foster care or have parents that don’t care and all they have for structure is school and this money helps the school provide things that help our children in the future. Not every child has opportunity that others do. Where are those kids gonna end up?? You guys prove my point of ignorance in the community. U didn’t even comprehend what I was saying u went off on your own interpretation that schools are responsible for the kids. That was NOT at all what I said. I said the tax is a great thing cause hopefully it will give the kids that don’t have it what they need to succeed… Jane Rae is the dumb one who made it seem I said its there job to raise our kids. I didn’t even mention anything about them raising kids. I was mention all the after school sports an clubs and trips they don’t have anymore. Kids now a days don’t care if they get bad grades or get in trouble because they have nothing to lose. Sometimes parents being mad IS NOT enough. If they knew they were going to lose going to the championship game with their team or not singing at Carnigie Hall with chorus they might have a better chance of staying out of trouble. I’ve raised my kids and other children in the foster system an I see the differences in the children who have a great structure in their life. Of course I know it is our job to raise our kids but unfortunately not everyone does or they are struggling to make ends meet and can’t be there all the time. I’d rather pay an extra half cent to hopefully get the kids what they need in our school rather then paying for jail sentence later or for them to be on welfare. Do you guys understand what I mean now or should I break it down better??? Rememer the saying it takes a village to raise a child!! I don’t mean dump your kids in the village I mean everyone and thing your child come across they are learning from so I’d rather them learn from a well funded school system , extra activities , and after school programs rather then the well funded drug/violence system!!!!! Do u know they learn early these days that drug dealing and robbing is the quickest and easiest way to make good money. Rather then the school having the funds to show them there is more in the world. Some kids have to share books or can’t do home work cause they don’t have computers so I’m willing to pay a little extra to ensure we all have done all we can to help our children’s future. Get it guys???????!!!!!! It was never about them raising our children!!!!!!!!! Ignorance is bliss

    Thursday, 10 September 2015, 10:56 am
    • You do realize that according to the ballot language the tax is to fund “fixed capital improvements” to school facilities. This doesn’t mean books or teachers or extracurricular activities as those are operations costs. They are talking about the buildings and other facilities in the school district, which could include the main district offices and not necessarily the classrooms that your children attend.

The tax was sold as typical FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) with the implication that it will be spent on things you think it will (books, teachers, extracurricular activities) when the accountability for where the money was actually spent will not come later down the road as it should.

When someone comes and asks you for money, you should ask them what their plan is for that money, not just blindly give it to them because they seem trustworthy.

      Thursday, 10 September 2015, 11:34 am
    • [Q] (Children 1st said) I said the tax is a great thing cause hopefully it will give the kids that don’t have it what they need to succeed…[/Q]
Hopefully, indeed. Stolen money to help kids succeed . . . in what, learning that to steal money is the way to succeed?

I’ve certainly nothing against children. And yet, how low is it to use the children as an excuse to steal money from the populace? (How about, if one cannot afford to raise and educate their own children, that the woman can learn to keep her legs crossed.)

How much does it really cost to learn the basics? I mean, life is simple, it’s man’s convoluted thinking that makes it complex. For instance, a medical doctor spends eight plus years in education, and yet can’t heal people? That’s ludicrous. Given the correct model of how the human body works, one can learn how the body heals well within a season.

      Thursday, 10 September 2015, 2:20 pm
      • As an addendum: Truly needed medical professionals are those who work in emergency and those who perform necessary surgery. Those medical professionals who are palliating symptoms of the body, which are only signals that the body is doing it’s work of detoxification, are the people who need to reevaluate their professional status.

        Thursday, 10 September 2015, 2:25 pm
  • Children 1st. Gotta agree with Jane Rae. An education begins the moment you have a child. You can’t expect the schools to implicate education, discipline, and babysitting. Stupid is as stupid does. Some people don’t get it, yet they continue to overpopulate. Turn off the TV’s and computers at home once in a while, and YOU teach them to read, write and calculate.

    Thursday, 10 September 2015, 8:35 am
  • Wow, reading the comments above makes me believe that we need to send some of the adults living here back to school. The grammar and spelling are atrocious. Additionally, the naive and uninformed comments bolster the idea of having a competency test prior to allowing people to vote.

If you don’t like what happened and you didn’t vote, it’s your fault. Yes, the county and the half-cent tax proponents took advantage of special election timing to jam in this initiative, but they can only do that because there are many folks who don’t pay attention to their government and what it’s doing. That’s a shame.

For those saying that they will shop elsewhere, just suck it up and live your life normally. You are cutting off your nose to spite your face. Do you really want to support another county’s population with your money in spite of the one you live in? Are you going to spend more in gas than the tax you are avoiding just to prove a point that no one will see? Do you want to hurt the local businesses that employ people in this county?

If you don’t like the tax, get an initiative on the ballot to have it repealed. Acting stupidly to protest something you don’t like is not productive and doesn’t change anything. If you don’t like how your government is run, elect people for reasons other than their party affiliation or the ease of remembering their name.

By the way, if you supported the tax and think it will really help the children in the ways the proponents promised and implied… you are truly naive. The government will just keep taking and taking your money with whatever excuse they can come up with at this moment. They need accountability and need to live within their means, just like the people they govern.

    Thursday, 10 September 2015, 4:16 am
  • They just snuck through a gas tax and now this. They want you to pay $5 bucks to park at pine island or rogers park. What a joke. It should be 5 or 10 cents there nickle and dime parks anyway. Pasco pasco parks smoke ours and free to boot. I love Springhill. Love it or leave it.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 10:25 pm
  • Congratulations to all the proponents of this tax increase. Half a cent sounds so innocent. You folks just voted yourselves an 8.3% increase in your sales tax. And we all know that government at any level knows best how to spend our money.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 9:53 pm
  • I have been living here in Hernando county for 25 years. It has always been about senior citizens for god sakes children do live here too! Look at the other county’s they’re more kid friendly! What’s 1/2 cents sales tax for the school’s going to hurt you were already paying it last year. It for the children!

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 8:15 pm
    • I little stolen money here, a little stolen money there. What’s it going to hurt you? Taxes are stolen money, have you heard? Voting in a tax is mob rule, have you heard?

If one-half of a penny ain’t gonna hurt me if it’s stolen from me, then it ain’t gonna hurt you to not have that one-half of a penny, do you reckon?

      Thursday, 10 September 2015, 8:09 am
  • I hope we see published reports of all the repairs being made to the schools, becaus the cynic in me says we’ll be having this same conversation in a few years.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 5:43 pm
  • Jane Rae oh really I didn’t know that’s as my job oh shoot…although Some parents don’t know that or just can’t. There are a lot of single parents who have to work. If the schools had the activities and sports and career building like they used to then the less kids would be on the streets doing what they do. Have u not noticed how crime and burglary and drugs are getting out of control here in our backyards!! They don’t have anything to look forward to. I didn’t want bad grades or get in trouble then I couldn’t play or to functions. Even in chorus u went to sing at Disney or even to New York. That was school money that they just don’t have now. I’ve seen improvements with that tax last time so for the ones saying its BS that’s whining. Obviously more people agree than not. I’m on here a lot today because I feel strongly about this issue unlike u who I have seen on every article I’ve looked at. Which isn’t a lot but it’s enough to show u sit around too much with free time!!!! My kids will be ok I instill structure in their life but unfortunately a lot of kids don’t have that and need the activities in school. Its not whining when my vote won it’s whining when people lost and complain and say they taking business elsewhere to save a half cent. That’s a great idea lets hurt our own town business’s. So your research on where the money went last time then come back on here and talk. I hate when people just talk without having facts.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 3:49 pm
  • @children first, Oh hell no, the parent (you) are responsible for seeing your child is not a thug or worthless not the DaMN school. Nobody is whining just voicing their opinions , did you sleep through the teaching of the constitution of the USA. 30 YEARS AGO,AS 4 US SITTING ON OUR COMPUTERS WHINNING, YOU ARE ON HERE A LOT TODAY TOO, WOULD YOU LIKE SOME CHEESE WITH THAT WHINE? Let the games begin lmbo

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 1:56 pm
  • AMEN SHANE F ,AGREE COMPLETELY. Citrus and Pasco here I come to spend my money

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 1:44 pm
  • The money is not going in to the school’s but people’s pockets

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 12:48 pm
  • If u don’t like it then move!! We’ve had this half cent before and the schools ( all of them) benifitted!!! My kids are going to same school I went to 30 yrs ago and there has been more improvements with the half cent tax then in the 25 yrs without. People waste money everyday so why not try to help. Do u like how over run this county has become with thugs and drop outs?? Well maybe this could give those students a chance to become someone instead of a statistic. I live paycheck to paycheck to provide for my family and a half cent is well worth it to me… Instead of sitting on your computers writing negative things all the time maybe you should do research on how much that half cent helped. Without that half cent tax our kids would have no buses or too many kids in classes. Would you rather them shut more schools down cause I know you would have a lot to say then also. For u guys talking about trucks sitting around and them buying 40s. Well this isn’t for them it’s for our children’s school and anyone who has kids in public school knows they dam well need it!!!! Instead of being so negative go with the flow and teach our children to become upstanding citizens instead of negative Nancy’s. Then they can make their own money instead of taking it from people!! Look around our children are becoming violent, lazy , whinny people because they don’t/ didn’t have the right guidance in life.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 12:40 pm
  • If I were sticking around more I’d organize shared shopping outside the county. Take turns driving, fuel vehicles and buy all your taxible items outside the county. I know with my truck I could take two other couples and bring back enough to feed 6 families for a couple weeks. And that would really fix the problem quickly.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 12:22 pm
    • Unless it is a beer & booze run …. I think the tax will be the same in Hernando/Pasco/Citrus on any edibles. That would be zero. Since there is no sales tax on fuel – only per gallon fuel tax – you might need to pull out a spreadsheet to figure out how far you can go before it becomes a wash between savings versus expense. Now if you are buying a vehicle – Pasco’s tax will be $25 more than Hernando’s and Citrus’s will be $25 dollars less than Hernando’s and $50 less than Pasco’s. All this is contingent on you spending $5000 or more on a vehicle. After the expenditure of $5000 – the tax returns to 6% for the remainder of the purchase.

      Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 10:52 pm
  • either pay the half cent tax or your house taxes will go up ALOT

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 12:07 pm
  • Citrus county still 6%We dont have to spend our money here.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 11:32 am
  • Sidewalks to nowhere, county trucks hiding in the bushes as I write go to circle k on deltona and cortez at lunch time any day watch what they buy 40oz, I think that might start to help your money situation. We build your penitentiarys we build your schools brain wash education to make us your fools, hatred is your reward for our love telling us about your god above we gonna chase you crazy baldheads out of town. Here comes the con man coming with his con plan we wont take no bribe got to stay alive. Jah live Rastafari

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 11:04 am
    • What on earth did you say?

      Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 9:21 pm
  • Only in 2015 America would citizens vote to implement more taxation on themselves. I am expecting poor results from this choice. Hernando County residents just watch and see if any improvements are made. I highly doubt our school board will be any better at managing anymore money coming out of our pockets because they can’t manage what we have already.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 10:49 am
  • My children have portables too not a big deal at least they have extra classes rather then cramming then all in. U guys are a bunch a babies. The children are out future and right now our future isn’t looking so good so whatever might give them a fighting chance!!! If u are unhappy with it school change it. Regarding moton portables should be the least of your concern. Check the surrounding area

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 10:03 am
  • Finally a move in the rite direction for the county and yes lets Hope the school board can divide the funds evenly amongst each school not just certain ones. They ALL need repairs

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 8:50 am
  • I know a lot of schools got use of the money last time. What’s a few dollars here an there for our children?? Maybe we will have less thugs and more Drs. If not we should add another half cent to fix that problem

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 8:49 am
  • Please tell me when ANY government has spent the money wisely?? U mm never oh well

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 8:17 am
  • What a waste. If I don’t have enough money to buy something or repair something, I certainly don’t write a check for it. Live within your budget.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 8:08 am
  • Well, I don’t have to spend my money in Hernando county and now I won’t. No way I’m going to contribute to the Hernando County Prison System.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 7:07 am
  • @ jim this is for Hern. county schools, that includes all of hernando schools.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 6:23 am
  • Nice the election was held before the snowbirds get back. It should have been held in November. Such BS in this county and we should trust them with more money. I will buy as much as possible in Pasco.

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 6:02 am
    • YUP! We never got an absentee ballot!! What gives??

      Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 11:53 am
    • Please do – the tax is .5% higher in Pasco – a full 7%

      Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 10:53 pm
  • Majority? 64000 voted before in the general election, 24000 in a “special” election! Let’s vote again with in the same election time & it losses every time I’ll bet! Just saying !

    Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 5:46 am
  • Now lets use the money equally. I am sick and tired of the Spring Hill schools being built and treated like the Taj Mahal and yet my Granddaughter goes to Moton Elementary and is in the 4th grade and has been in a portable classroom every year. It is not fair to not treat all children equal. Look at Challenger and Chocochatti, their curriculums far exceed Moton’s. Their programs are exceptional.

    Tuesday, 8 September 2015, 11:21 pm
  • Let’s just hope that the money goes where it belongs, that’s my only issue. Hernando County is not just SpingHill. I think people seem to forget that

    Tuesday, 8 September 2015, 10:52 pm
    • That money will go into the already overpaid pockets of the county commissioners.

      Wednesday, 9 September 2015, 11:55 am
  • Good

    Tuesday, 8 September 2015, 10:02 pm
  • I use a Debit Card… Can’t remember what a penny looks like!
