Man Arrested After “Stealing” His Own Pickup Truck

SPRING HILL – The owner of the Dodge pickup truck (pictured below) is behind bars this evening, after he allegedly stole his own truck from a local body shop.

According to Carlo Zarcone of Tate’s Auto Body, the Sheriff’s Office requested one of their tow trucks to tow and impound a vehicle from Killian Street, early this morning. Because keys to the truck were not available, Zarcone says they disengaged the transmission linkage to allow the truck to roll freely.

Just before 5:00 pm this evening, the truck’s owner, 33-year-old William Michael Hennessey entered the Tate’s fenced property on Shoal Line Road, repaired the linkage and drove off with his truck.

Zarcone contacted the Sheriff’s Office and within minutes a deputy spotted Hennessey driving eastbound on Spring Hill Drive. A traffic stop was conducted and Hennessey was taken into custody.

According to jail records, Hennessey is charged with one count of Burglary, but it is not known If that charges is related to taking his truck from Tate’s or the early morning incident on Killian Street. Zarcone says Hennessey is accused of trying to steal air conditioning units, which led to the truck being towed.

We will bring more on this story as it develops.

  • Dennis, impounding a vehicle on private property is not illegal… However, killing someone on your property for doing their job who means you no harm (cop, tow truck driver, process server, property appraiser, prospector…) Is murder. But talking about it makes you sound super tough!

  • Dennis Purdy we don’t care how it was up north. Down here we have a little thing called Florida state statute 493 among others. It is perfectly legal to impound anything off owners property. The issue is how the vehicle was taken back. Way to stand behind the criminals by the way. You should find a hobby or volunteer instead of sitting behind your complaining about everything incessantly. News flash if you hate everything about Hernando county you are free to leave.

    • Eskimo, try it on my property and you will get a northern response….through the head.

  • reply: You may impound without an order if the vehicle is actually in use transporting the property. But taking it out of his yard doesn’t meet those requirements. If it was to be evidence it shouldn’t be impounded at a body shop. No, I don’t make this stuff up. It’s called rules of evidence and due process. Read a little.

  • Or illegally parked, a repossession, abandoned in a roadway, hell you can get impounded if you get out of your car at the pick up line at TIA. All with no court order. Dennis Purdy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

  • Oh, I forgot to mention, he now may also be charged with trespassing.

  • So, if the vehicle was used in a Felony crime (stealing air conditioners) LEO has the right to impound the vehicle. Now, since the vehicle is in impound it is for the time being property of Sheriffs Dept. Since sparky decided to go onto property illegally, reconnect his trans linkage, and drive out of the lot without authorization that then becomes another felony of stealing a vehicle. It is temporarily Law Enforcement property until investigation is complete and vehicle is cleared.

  • So now you need a court order to impound a vehicle? So… do you just make stuff up as you type it…..?

    Wednesday, 19 August 2015, 11:01 am
  • I’m with you dann. There better be a court order to cover that impound or all his charges go away.
