Man Charged with Agg Assault, Battery, After Threatening Mother’s Ex-Husband with Loaded Shotgun

WEEKI WACHEE – A man faces several felony charges, after a family dispute turned violent when he discovered an undesired guest inside his home.

According an arrest affidavit, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 7311 Edinburgh Ave early Sunday Morning, after receiving reports of a weapons disturbance. Prior to their arrival, Deputies were advised that 53-year-old James Wade Meadows came home to find his mother in the company of her ex-husband, 78-year-old John Hazelton. Officials say Meadows demanded that Hazelton leave the residence but his mother told him she would not make him leave. That’s when Meadows retrieved a loaded 12-gauge shotgun from the bedroom, pointed it directly at Hazelton, and stated, “I will blow your f**king head off.” A struggle ensued over the gun and Meadows was eventually disarmed.

According to sources, 911 operators could hear someone screaming, “no wade please don’t” before the call went silent.

Before Deputies arrived on the scene, Meadows fled the residence and hid inside a boat in the back yard. Deputies eventually located Meadows and placed him into custody.

During the altercation, Hazleton suffered minor injuries after being struck in the face. Hazelton told Deputies during an interview, “I thought I was going to die.”

Meadows is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery on a person over the age of 65, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Meadows is currently free on a $14,000 bond.

  • At this point I don’t understand Hernando county. I swear it has ots own set of law’s. Even if it was his house and the other man was not welcome he was still a convicted felon with a gun and that’s a big NO NO…… So how was his bond so low? I bet his mother (1 of the victims) posted his bond and that’s mot aloud either.

    • The problem is if it’s her house or if she’s a resident there, then she has the right to let that person in.
