McKenna Makes Dream a Reality at Savannah State University
By Bianca Rodriguez
Playing division one baseball has been a long time dream for Central High School graduate Trevor McKenna. After 15 years of hard work and dedication, on June 2nd of 2015 he signed with Savannah State University on an athletic and academic scholarship. McKenna has been working for many years on his craft and I asked him what did it take to achieve his dream of playing division one baseball.
Trevor stated that he has grown a love for baseball ever since he was 4 years old.Since then he has participated in t-ball, travel ball, rec-ball and school ball.
Trevor played his first year of college as a pitcher for Lake Sumter State College.
Trevor noted, “My weekly workout mostly consists of the main attributes you need to be a successful pitcher… leg workouts, core workouts, agility, flexibility and the overall weight training workouts to get myself bigger and stronger. My workout plan hasn’t really changed since high school. I have just learned more about my body in college and what I need to do to maintaining my pitching physique and understanding that workouts can both help your velocity as well as stamina.”
Being at a JUCO for a year away from home was only a little taste of how transitioning to a new state with feel for Trevor but he expressed that though being away from home, family and friends may be hard to cope with; the fact that he is following his dreams and playing the sport he loves makes it all worth it.
I asked McKenna what his first thought was when he found out he had the opportunity to play division one baseball, he replied, “Well, receiving a full ride there, it was truly a dream come true. It was such a rewarding feeling of having my dreams come true from all the hard work I put into baseball over the years. I felt so blessed to have such a great opportunity ahead of me playing division one baseball.”
The ultimate dream for McKenna is to play in the major leagues but being brought up by such great and supportive parents, they have taught him that having a plan B is very important. He is so excited to earn his bachelor’s degree in business but he expressed that he will keep playing baseball and pursuing his dreams until someone tells him he no longer can. Trevor McKenna is a great role model for young and upcoming athletes. Dreams do come true if you put in the work.
