Mentally Ill Man Dies After Violent Encounter with Deputies, Exact Cause of Death Under Investigation

FLORAL CITY (CITRUS) – Mental illness took its toll on another victim this morning, after Deputies responded to a residence on East Wind Court, where a man was “violently harming himself.”

According to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to 8801 East Wind Court around 4:30 a.m. after a family member called 911 to report that 36-George Rogers was cutting himself repeatedly. When deputies tried to make contact with the Rogers, he locked himself in a bathroom and continued to cut himself with multiple objects. Deputies used a shield when they forced entry, but Rogers resisted and “showed incredible strength,” during the encounter, according to reports.

Once in custody, Rogers went into cardiac arrest and died at the scene.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also conducting an investigation, due to Rogers being in custody at the time of his death.

  • I must be missing something because I do not see anywhere where the cops would be at fault here. This man was hurting himself and the cops were trying to help him. Period! You should be thanking the officers for trying to help him

  • Police likely killed him. Otherwise there wwouldntbe an “investigation”, they would just say “he died from his cuts” or whatever

    • I believe that whenever someone dies in the presence of Law Enforcement Officers an investigation is conducted. I know if it was my child I would want to know exactly what his “cause of death was”.

  • Title is misleading, Tom.

The deceased was cutting on himself. He died later.

How is the deputies coming in to possibly save his life considered “a violent encounter with deputies?” Someone reading only the headline would think that they’ve killed him.

Putting themselves in harm’s way for a guy who was determined to kill himself shouldn’t be rewarded with Thisbe kind of sensationalism…those officers are real people that have to go home with those kind of losses on their hearts.

Sounds like the only violence was perpetrated by the man himself, on himself.

    • Sarah, you are the one who took it that way. Tom did not imply anything. Mental illness can be a very dangerous thing. Many people hurt themselves, some in smaller ways, others go big and become very dangerous and too violent to be around. And even more often….cops ARE INVOLVED. It’s a part of what they have to do. And that was the case here JUST AS TOM REPORTED IT. There was no sensationalism here. The facts are the facts, and that he had caused serious harm to himself, and so much so that something went undetected for a short period of time resulting in his death while in their custody. They were also put in harms way so they HAD to protect themselves…which he reported. So just HOW is that sensationalism? Sad things happen…
Tom, great story. Keep up the great writing. You did just fine…

    • When I read the story I didn’t get the impression that the Law Officers killed the young man, not at all. What I got out of the story was that this man had mental issues and was a cutter. He was probably in the bathroom and was continuing to cut and the Officers didn’t want him to kill himself. I don’t think it put the Officers in a position of blame for his death.
