Multiple Brush Fires Reported in Hernando, National Guard Assisting with Black Hawk Helicopter

UPDATE: 7:36 P.M. – All fires listed below are extinguished and firefighters are conducting mop ups.

There are several other fires being reported around the county. We will bring a full report on any fire that is substantial in size or threatens residential areas.

HERNANDO – RNRF is receiving reports of several brush fires around Hernando County at this time.

In addition to the Crescent Road fire that RNRF reported earlier this afternoon, there are now two new brush fires in Brooksville.

Firefighters are just arriving on scene of a fast moving 1-acre brush fire at 21262 Moore Road in Brooksville, where officials say there is heavy fuel in its path. The National Guard is on scene with a Black Hawk helicopter, preparing to drop water on the fire.

A smaller brush fire, possibly an illegal burn, has been reported in the area of Saturn Road and Oakfork Trail, also in Brooksville.

Some Hernando County residents say they’ve received “Fire Weather Warning” on their cell phones and that they are asked to reply with YES if they received the message.

Hernando County is among many Florida Counties that are under a mandatory burn ban.

  • So I drove by the Moore Road fire last night about 9 o’clock it’s still burning and firefighters are back out there today right now at 8 o’clock this morning. I sat there for about 10 minutes last night and watched flames burning I witnessed a Burning Tree fall down now how come there’s a burn ban but the fire department left a fire unattended.??? Isn’t that risky what about floating Amber’s. Oh by the way Woke up this morning and there smoke all over couldn’t smell it yesterday but sure can now hope it’s not a threat?

  • That lake dried out fast. We drove snorkeled atvs through it for years, there were 8 to 12 ft deep spots where the lilly pads were a few months back. Now it is dry completely. There have been actual cars driving where the deep spots were. Rain has been rare lately.
