Murchio, Lady Hornets Ace First Test
By Danny Aiello Jr
After dropping a 5A-7 tilt to open their season, the Lady Hornets of Weeki Wachee bounced back knocking off Hernando (1-1, 1-1 5A-7) in three straight games, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-23.
The Lady Leopards, coming off back-to-back district titles, had beaten Weeki Wachee (1-1, 1-1 5A-7) in the last two district finals and owned an 8-3 advantage in the previous 11 meetings between the schools.
The Hornets would go down 23-21 in the first game before Zoe Murchio sealed the game with a service ace.
Serving as the Libero, Murchio had a knack last season for being in the right spot at the right time in games, coming up with digs to keep rallies alive for Weeki Wachee all season.
When the Hornets needed her in service, she stepped up, also sealing game two with another service ace. Murchio would also add 28 digs to her stats by the end of the evening.
Miranda Werkmeister and Morgan Hnatiuk also had big nights for the Hornets front line as the former tallied nine kills and six aces while the latter recorded eight kills and an ace.
For Hernando, the loss was disappointing after coming off a thrashing of Central the night before.
After jumping out to a lead in game one, the Leopards made uncharacteristic errors, leading to a Weeki Wachee comeback.
Ali Bronson shined for Hernando recording 13 kills and two aces.
Both teams are in action again on Thursday when Weeki Wachee hosts Citrus and Hernando travels to county-rival Springstead.
