No Urgency by District to Address Employee’s Threat to Shoot Coworkers
BROOKSVILLE – On February 29th, RNRF responded to the service road behind Nature Coast Technical High School, where numerous deputies converged and detained Maintenance Worker, Ricky Macky. ORIGINAL REPORT
According to reports, Macky told fellow maintenance worker, Diego Gomez that he was going to get a gun and kill Springstead High School Maintenance worker, Bill Hawk, along with other people that he didn’t like. In fear for his and his co-worker’s safety, Gomez immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office.
The incident prompted the lockdown of both Nature Coast High School and adjacent Chocachatti Elementary School, until the situation was under control.
Macky never faced criminal charges as a result of the incident; however, the case was turned over to the Hernando County School Board to consider possible disciplinary action.
After running the original story, several concerned parents contacted RNRF, asking if the man who made violent threats on school grounds would be allowed to continue working around their children.
On March 12th, RNRF contacted HCSB Public Information Officer, Karen Jordan, asking that very question. In an email, we asked “Has Mr. Macky faced any disciplinary action, as a result of his admitted threat to shoot a fellow employee and other co-workers? If yes, what type of discipline? If no, what is the rationale with allowing those threats to go unpunished?”
Eleven days passed without an answer, so I emailed Jordan again on March 23rd and stated the following “Since you refuse to answer one simple question regarding Nature Coast Maintenance Worker, Ricky Macky, I would like to request a formal review his entire employment record - specifically any disciplinary action taken against him. Or you can answer the following question and save both of us a lot of time. Did Ricky Macky face disciplinary action for making threats to shoot co-workers on school grounds? What were those actions?”
I closed that email with a reminder of Florida’s Constitutional Statute regarding the access of public information.
The following day we received this statement from Karen Jordan: “According to our records, this office has responded in accordance with our process for responding to media and or public records requests. However, some of the information that you regularly request has the potential to violate student or staff rights to privacy or involve matters of student confidentiality or ongoing investigations. We make every effort to provide accurate and timely information but will only provide information that meets the scope of public record law.” Regarding Ricky Macky, Jordan stated “Currently, an investigation is underway by the district. Any information related to the allegation will be released for review 10 days following the conclusion of that investigation.
Meanwhile, students at Nature Coast High, Springstead High, and Chocachatti Elementary will have to wait to see if the District has a problem with one of their employees threatening to shoot coworkers.
At this time the District has given no indication as to when their “investigation” will conclude.

This is complete and utter bull!! Our kids are not safe when employees are threatening to kill other employees and people they don’t like. The man was in fear, so much so that he called the law. That constitutes a crime, under Florida statute.
It’s time I take my kids out and homeschool them. I’m over this bitch and her nasty attitude, and total disregards to the concerns of parents.
Sounds like Karen is smart and doesn’t give into media threats. I’m sure the district is doing whatever they need to do to keep our children safe.
Isn’t this guys last name spelled Mackey? Is he related to Al Mackey, who works for or worked for the school board for years?
Richard Mackey has been in trouble before for DUI and battery.

The school system might be nice people but they demand too much and take too much power, thinking they are always right because they don’t know any better.
What? Is life going to be unbearable for a fired janitor? This is a very bad mistake and the case is cut and dried although I usually take the side of the underdog - you can not threaten people with a gun on school grounds and keep coming to work there. Actually, I can’t think of anywhere that he wouldn’t be already out except the pc school system and when they go down due to their own stupidity they take ours with them.

Nope…it’s a typical response from Hernando Co School District. It has been that way the entire 26yrs that I have lived here. They are very complacent about these kind of incidents, and hold to a basic principle to do nothing….unless something happens. It’s a ‘wait and see if something actually does happen, and we’ll deal with it then, if it does ideology. The Hernando Co. Sheriff’s office is the same way. Can’t do anything about it….
They ALL wait until something bigger and much worse happens, then have to apologize to the community when it does. Then it’s too late…
Threats to kill and he his still at school property, why not placed on admin leave until this matter cleared by HCSO. Another blunder by the school system who is lead by a board of incompetent members.

Having lived here since 1982, and worked in the system for over 25 years, there are hundreds of eye-popping stories I could tell you about the Hernando County school system: both county office and individual schools and their personnel. Just suffice it to say: no good deed goes unpunished and no “connected” person ever gets punished!!!

Then, the spokesperson for the school board, Karen Jorden, stalls any progress in this, citing “privacy”. We have elections coming up. I have a question the school board PIO cited student and staff privacy. However if a student had been alleged to have made the same comments would they have not been suspended? At the least. Tom if iam not mistaken are school employees not public employees which anyone can view their employment records?

Seems our comments are becoming a personal battle.The issue is the police report states that he did not deny saying it We still have no action from the school board or at least not releasing the information Our main focus should be safe campuses for the students and safety for all of its employees, let’s keep our eye on the ball please. If we don’t want this to fall on deaf ears we need to stay on subject and approach it reasonably. I understand no action by the school board is not reasonable. I hope that we don’t wait for something to happen before we take action. We need to ask for action and information on how it is being handled that is not an unreasonable request by the public. I know if I was one of the victims that were threatened I wouldn’t want to go to work. It would be a terrible thing to go to work in fear for your life

Is the guy on school grounds working? I’m sure that is all that concerned parents care about. Could you just ask that? I trust the school board will handle discipline legally which is why they can’t respond until after legal action is completed..
I believe what people are upset about is that if a student made those threats they would immediately be suspended as a precaution. So why hasn’t an adult employee at the very least suspended until the investigation is complete?
