One Confirmed Fatality After Head-On Collision Between Semi and Pickup Truck

UPDATE: 10:42 P.M. – The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the deceased as 48-year-old Kenneth Stephen Koenen of Spring Hill.

According to a preliminary investigation, Koenen was traveling eastbound on County Line Road, when he attempted to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone. As a result, 36-year-old Yariel Iturriaga, the driver of the semi-tractor-trailer, swerved to avoid a collision. That’s when Koenen swerved back in the same direction and collided head-on.

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 7:18 am
    • Apparently it wasn’t a poor choice but someone who cut him off and he tried to avoid an accident..instead he had no room…. From the rnrf fb page his wife was on the phone with him and heard it all..have some respect for the dead how about..

      • Alpha papa, guess the deceased did not hear the warning about driving and being on the phone. The poor choices made by the deacease led to poor results. In this case the poor result was death. Got to ask yourself how important was that phone call.

  • Sad for the family & all that was Involved! But Sounds like Mr. Koenen was either Angry at the car in front of him or in a Hurry! So Look where it got him. Slow Down & Be Patience People Nothing is Worth all This.

  • Ice Man you don’t have to be seen by the officer to be charged. Your cell phone records can and are subpoenaed and tell whether you were texting at the time of the accident. A few years ago I was rear ended and the other person said it was my fault. Both of our phone records were subpoenaed and found out that I was not on my phone and the other person was texting at the exact moment of the accident.

  • This was at the spot where the road merges down from two lanes to one…people race there all the time to get in front and sometimes you get someone who is impatient passing on either side of the car in front of them (while not in a marked lane of traffic). Is this move really worth your life?

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 2:18 am
  • At least for once the idiot who CAUSED the crash is the one who was killed – instead of an innocent victim who WAS obeying the law. . . They make no passing zones for a reason. . .

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 1:17 am
    • Justice, he was still a human being. His family may read this, be kind when someone dies. You don’t know why he was speeding or passing. Just saying!

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 2:23 pm
      • I guess, By your logic, it would be better for the family of the innocent victim on the road that night to be reading comments about their dad loved one… There was zero reason for that guy to break the laws because he was in some goddamn hurry… I didn’t say anyone deserved to die only that if someone had to, it should be the person that was being reckless… I really don’t give two shits if you think that makes me a bad person. That is all.

        Thursday, 8 February 2018, 8:03 pm
        • you may not be a bad person, it’s just that you acted like an a$$hole.

          Friday, 9 February 2018, 12:46 pm
  • Prayers to all involved..

  • Just so pitifully sad. That whole area on County Line Rd especially between US 19 and Shady Hills is a mess. Construction has made it even more dangerous. There needs to be a double lane on each side and a turning lane. The speed is crazy and trying to get on CL Rd from any side street is an accident waiting to happen frequently on a daily basis. There needs to be a authentic sense of urgency to complete the construction and as much I hate to say it, add lights to slow drivers down!
May the deceased man RIP and 🙏 For his family once notified.😣

    Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 10:44 pm
    • The deceased caused the accident by disobeying a valid traffic law of ‘not passing in a no-passing zone’. HIS stupidity, or impatient arrogance, or both.

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:19 am
  • Sending prayers to all involved

    Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 10:40 pm
  • The only way a crash can happen like that is if one was passing the other it will be in the report in couple of days then you can go get a copy of the report of it

    Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 10:14 pm
  • Prayers for all. There are few words to say when these things happen.

    Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 9:30 pm

    Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 8:51 pm

    Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 8:46 pm
    • I agree 100%

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 2:25 pm

  • Texting and driving is a real killer can’t wait until they finally make it ILLEGAL!

    Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 7:17 pm
    • Are you assuming he was texting and driving?

      Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 7:39 pm
    • Where does it say they were texting and driving?

      Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 7:41 pm
    • First of all, texting and driving IS illegal in Florida. It has been illegal since Oct 1st of 2014. Second of all, it states nowhere in the story that the driver was texting and driving. Tom would have no idea about that anyway, since the police won’t release details until after the investigation is complete. So why don’t you and you’re troll friends grow up and stop making assumptions when you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about!!!

      Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 9:47 pm
      • Texting and driving is only a secondary offense. You can’t be pulled over for it. Also you can do it whenever you are waiting at a red light. The only way to get in trouble for it, is when you commit another crime. Such as running a stop sign or speeding. Also the cop would have to witness you texting while you committed the other crime otherwise you can’t get in trouble for texting.

        Wednesday, 7 February 2018, 11:20 pm
  • Prayers going out for ALL involved and their families. It’s a horrifying experience to realize someone dies at the scene of an accident. To first responders you are also prayed for. Yours is not an easy task to perform. PEOPLE, PLEASE, DRIVE DEFENSIVELY, COURTEOUSLY, CAUTIOUSLY. NO ONE PERSON IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANOTHER AND NOTHING IS SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU SHOULD LOSE YOUR LIFE FOR IT. EVERYONE’S LIVES MATTER TO SOMEONE. MAY GOD BLESS AND KEEP US ALL SAFE.
