Pedestrian Dies in Hit and Run After Struck by Three Vehicles on US-19

HUDSON (PASCO) – A late night hit and run crash claimed the life of a New Port Richey man, after he walked into oncoming traffic on US-19.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 56-year-old Stephen John Matava tried to cross US-19 just south of Saltwater Blvd around 10:30 p.m. last night. Before reaching the median, three vehicles struck Matava in the northbound inside lane. Matava suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Officials say the first vehicle that struck Matava fled the scene and is only described as a charcoal gray Hyundai, either a sedan or SUV. The vehicle should be missing a left outside mirror and headlight.

The second and third vehicle to strike Matava remained at the scene.

Officials are asking anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.

  • If the 1st car had stopped the driver would not have been charged but now the driver is facing 4 years for leaving the scene involving injury or death.

  • 56 years old that guy knew better is it possible the people in Hudson don’t know you have to look for cars before you cross the road

    • @Be Accountable So because he was 56 the driver is allowed to flee the scene and not stop. You’re an idiot.

      • O’well, I’m sorry you are reading challenged. I never said it was ok to drive off. I questioned the fact he was 56 and crossed the road in front of cars. Make bad choices and bad things happen. In this case his bad choice to cross without looking resulted in his death.

  • Chances are the deceased was under the influence, chances are the driver of the first vehicle was too. Even if it wasn’t his fault, if he or she was drinking they would face jail time. It’s scary to drive on 19 after a few drinks and even if you are sober, if someone steps in front of your vehicle – it’s going to cost you dearly.

  • With all these hit and runs, I think car manufacturers should look at putting a VIN label inside the side mirror housings. Often it’s side mirrors that get left behind.

  • Damn! Hate to see this. Prayers for the ones who are left behind. With that being said, I sure wish pedestrians would be more careful especially crossing after the sun goes down. Had a guy walk out onto 41 in Land O Lakes the other night and into my lane but I saw him at the last fraction of a second, I was watching the road, doing the suggested speed limit, he was wearing dark clothes. Everyone in our vehicle about had a heart attack.
