Pilot Seriously Injured After Crashing Experimental Plane

BROOKSVILLE – Officials with Hernando County Fire Rescue are reporting a small plane crash at Tampa Bay Regional Airport that seriously injured the Pilot.

According to Assistant Chief Kevin Carroll, at 10:37 a.m., Hernando County Fire Rescue (HCFR) responded to a reported plane crash in a wooded area of the Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport.  Airport officials and HCFR units arrived within several minutes and found the pilot standing near the burning wreckage.

Advanced life-support care was rapidly administered to the 63 year/old pilot, who was flown by Bayflite to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries.  Additional HCFR crews rapidly extinguished the plane and wooded area without further incident.

The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has been contacted for further investigation.

  • I just recently met this gentleman at a EAA function that was held at the airport. He played a big part in organizing the young eagles so they could get their first flights. Seemed like a wonderful guy, I’ll be praying for his speedy recovery.
