Second Dog in Two Weeks Locked Inside Vehicle at Weeki Wachee Springs

WEEKI WACHEE – Another dog left inside a vehicle at Weeki Wachee Springs prompts a call to law enforcement, but this time the owners left without facing the consequences.

Around 11:00 a.m. today, Park Officials were alerted to a locked vehicle that was occupied by a small dog. A Life Guard stood by and monitored the interior temperature while waiting for law enforcement to arrive on scene. About 20 minutes after the initial report, the owners walked up to the vehicle and prepared to leave.

The owners say they were traveling from Louisiana and did know Florida law prohibits leaving animals alone in a car. I asked one of the women if they did this very often and she said “No, that’s why we left a bowl of water in the car… We thought that would be okay.”

The owners left the park before law enforcement arrived on scene.

A similar incident occurred less than two weeks ago at Weeki Wachee Springs, but the dog’s owner in that case was issued a $500 fine.

  • To Just Talking, these “ladies” were from Louisiana not Alabama. And they DID KNOW it was illegal and still left the dog. Would like to thank the sheriff’s office for their “quick response time”!!! Only kidding about that but just think how safe we will all be now that they have taken over. REALLY THINK ABOUT IT.

  • Saying you didn’t know the Florida laws is an utterly ridiculous thing to say!!!!!! Anyone with common sense could figure out that it gets extremely hot in the vehicle, especially coming from Alabama. It’s extremely hot in summer there, too. I’ve come to a point in my life that I just can’t tolerate blatant liars and stupidity!!
As for HCSO, they don’t want to be bothered with the paperwork!

  • Little animals are at the mercy of there “people”. Me personally,I care more for most animals than I do for people.we can come and go as we please and make our own decisions regarding our wants and needs.30 days county 1st offense.90 days second offense 1129 third offense. It looks harsh but that would definitely make almost anyone think twice about leaving their pets in a hot car asbif they were expendable and didn’t matter.aling with a generous reward to those who report this crime or who break a window to “save a pet” with no 1uestions asked.i bet we would rarely read of incidents like these.

  • Perhaps the park can put up a sign that staff will break a window in any vehicle that has a live animal left in it, per Florida law. Might make morons think twice before leaving a living, breathing animal in a hot car.

    • Lady, the third paragraph first sentence says “they DID know” that’s why they left a bowl of water in the car, they thought that would be alright. They DID KNOW and still did it!!!! They need to stay up north or board the pets if they travel.

      Thursday, 5 July 2018, 12:51 pm
    • My apologies they need to stay in Louisiana or board the animals when traveling. By the way BLESS THAT LIFEGUARD WHO STAYED AND MONITORED THE TEMPERATURE.
