Sharks Rout Central 59-20
De’Vonta Smith ran for 217 yards, caught a pass for 42 yards and scored three times, but that wasn’t enough Thursday as the Nature Coast Sharks beat Central, 59-20.
Smith would showcase his talents on touchdown runs of 62 and 70 yards, while catching a 42-yard score, but it would be the stable of Sharks (3-0, 1-0 5A-7) that left people talking.
Brian Haygood (217, 4 Touchdowns) and TJ Owens (207, 3 Touchdowns) each ran for over 200 yards, and Willie Coffey added 103 yards and a score of his own, as the Sharks used the running game to gain over 600 yards of total offense, while scoring all eight of their touchdowns via the run.
Nature Coast would score the first 14 points as Haygood would score on a 15-yard keeper, before Owens would add a touchdown, as he went 55-yards untouched to the end zone.
Smith would answer going 62-yards for the score as time expired to end the first quarter, cutting the lead to 14-7.
Central (1-2, 0-1 5A-7) would get no closer, as the Sharks had an answer in the form of Owens who would score from 71 and 34 yards.
After Smith took off on a 70-yard scamper, Coffey (70 yards) and Haygood (87 yards) would score, sending Nature Coast into the break up 41-14.
Haygood would score on runs of 10 and 46 yards in the third quarter, enforcing the running clock mercy rule, as the Sharks led 56-14.
Replacing quarterback Sam Garner (0 completions, 1 interception), transfer Izzy Zena went 2-of-2 through the air, including a 42-yard touchdown pass to Smith.
Nature Coast will travel to Crystal River next week looking to win their 17th straight regular season contest, while Central will host Weeki Wachee in the “Battle of Hexam” rivalry game.
