Smith slashes records as Sharks beat Central
By Danny Aiello Jr
DeShawn Smith rewrote the Nature Coast record books Friday, as he helped the Sharks down Central 53-18.
Smith got off to a slow start recording nine yards on his first three carries, but ended up exploding for 20 carries a school-record 415 rushing yards and seven touchdowns as the Sharks ran wild on the Bears.
Late in the first quarter, a scuffle between the teams broke out following a loose ball and both teams would lose a player to ejections. The Bears lost WR/DB Ryan McCane, and Nature Coast lost their starting QB Jamison Carnegie, forcing the Sharks to feature a wildcat offense.
The Wildcat proved effective as the first play saw Smith go 89-yards to the house, giving Nature Coast (4-0, 1-0 5A-7) a 13-0 lead.
Central (2-2, 0-1 5A-7) would hang tough thanks to Sebastian Rivera and his two touchdown passes, but the Bears defense had no answer for the Sharks and Smith.
Because setting a school and county rushing record with 415 yards wasn’t enough, Smith added an eighth overall touchdown on a 35-yard catch from wideout turned quarterback Brian Haygood.
When it was all said and done, the senior tailback scored on runs of 15,89,72,62,2 and 37 yards.
Up Next: Nature Coast tries to remain perfect as they host Crystal River Friday at 7:30pm.
Up Next: Central travels to Weeki Wachee as district play continues for both squads, Friday at 7:30pm.
