Springstead Finishes Season Strong, Downs Weeki Wachee
By: Danny Aiello Jr
TJ Owens rushed for 199 yards and scored three times on the ground as Springstead used a late surge to beat Weeki Wachee 47-28 Friday.
In a game that had no meaning outside of these two programs wanting to finish their season strong, this back and forth contest felt meaningful.
Entering the game, Springstead (4-5) was riding a hot streak after starting the season on the wrong foot, while Weeki Wachee (4-6) came in looking for the school’s first .500 or better season.
It was the Eagles who started the scored, going up 12-0 on touchdowns by Dominique Walker and Owens.
Shawn O’Gorman, who wrapped up an excellent career for the Hornets, scored on a two-yard run to make it 12-7.
After Eagles QB Jordan Wright found Owens on a 39-yard touchdown strike, Owens would rush in a 2-point conversion, giving the Eagles a 20-8 lead.
Weeki Wachee answered as Montae Bostick ran in a score, before Alec Cromie found Jake Wilson who make a juggling catch in the end zone for a 14-yard score and a 21-20 Hornet lead.
After Weeki Wachee took the lead, Springstead took over, with Owens adding an 82-yard touchdown run, accompanied by scoring runs from Walker and Randy Morgan.
Alec Cromie would finish 15-of-27 through the air for 191 and a touchdown for the Hornets while O’Gorman had six catches for 91 yards and 60 yards rushing with two touchdowns.
Jordan Wright had 60 rushing yards and 76 passing yards to finish out a very strong Sophomore year.
