Suspect Demands $20 to Return Stolen Cell Phone, Charged with Extortion
BROOKSVILLE – A Brooksville man faces several serious charges after officials say he stole a woman’s cell phone and held it for ransom.
According to reports, deputies responded to R Place Bar and Grill on West Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd, Sunday, where a woman claimed that someone had stolen her cell phone and was demanding $20 to return it. Officials say 51-year-old Barry Lee Rrooks spoke to the victim and agreed to return to the bar if she gave him $20. Deputies lie in wait and observed Brooks exchange the victim’s phone for a $20 bill and then announced their presence. When Rooks saw the deputies he fled the scene but was captured a short distance away.
Rooks is charged with Extortion, Grand Theft, and Resisting Arrest.
