Suspicions of Gambling, Money Laundering, Fraud Lead to Second Sweepstakes Raid

SPRING HILL – For the second time this week, Detectives with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office  raided local sweepstakes establishments, after receiving information of alleged gambling violations.

On Tuesday, Detectives raided Butter’s Place located at 90 Commercial Way, after suspicions of illegal gambling and fraud were reportedly occurring inside the business.

Detectives raided High Five Sweepstakes located at 3616 Commercial Way today, after receiving reports of money laundering and other criminal activity.

Sgt. Scott Lamia says both search warrants were served after several months of investigating, but he did not elaborate on specific charges or if there were any arrests.

We asked the Sheriff’s Office for additional information on the investigations but they declined to comment at this time.

We will bring more on this story as it develops.

  • Has anyone ever thought, why lawyers are not hired to have this unjust law against the internet cafe’s overturned
as unconstitutional. Complaining to these local assholes just falls on deaf ears. They want to look like hero’s to
everyone but they are nothing but ZERO’s. The biggest zero is this states attorney Simpson. He has been out to
get the internet cafe’s from the beginning, has brought owners to trail and has lost every case. The courts do not
agree. Throw this idiot out of office and things could be changed drastically in favor of the owners.

  • Two Game Rooms get raided to scare others into closing down on their own. Now there is still one or two that is still in business. Not fair that they should be permitted to stay open while others had to close. I heard that the reason some were not raided is because HCSO has relatives that work there. In the meantime many others had to lose their jobs.

  • no competition & stupid, Man you two morons are the ones that are clueless. Listen you two idiots you need to think with your heads on top not the tiny head down below. Allied Veterans was busted and they only had 49 of them and that’s just one group and they made in profits in a six year period $300,000,000. That is 50 million a year for you two idiots. That is not even counting all the others throughout Florida. Read the reason why the Seminole tribe was suing the cafes in Jacksonville and think with what little brain cells you two have left. And think what would happen if all counties had them and allowed to operate. They are a threat to their profits and they want the monopoly in Florida. Now go and smoke some more of your Crack that you two are on somewhere else.

  • Hey folks, this state has brought legalizing gambling to a vote on previous occasions and it was voted down. If the people want legalized gambling, bring it up and vote it in. It will mean tons of jobs, tons of growth, a huge increase to tourism dollars, just to name a few. I can’t understand the voters who want these kinds of illegal businesses open and complain when they get busted when the opportunity for real gambling and the huge economic impact it will have is passed over. You people make no sense. Similar to the post who whined about not having gas money to travel to the hard rock to GAMBLE.

    • Oh Quenesha RE RE Can’t come out and play right now, he is way too busy explaining what money laundering is, maybe later. Is sounding more like a broken record tho. Lmbo. Go RE RE! ONE MORE TIME! LET’S HEAR IT?

      Friday, 9 February 2018, 5:20 pm
  • It should be mandatory that if you make a comment slamming the Sheriff and his department, you have to post your own criminal record first. This is a joke . I know I am in Florida now. 🤡

    Friday, 9 February 2018, 1:08 pm
    • Absolutely right. It’s obvious many of the negative comments are from people who’ve been “wrongfully arrested”.

      Friday, 9 February 2018, 4:49 pm
      • Indeed nope not me, pure as the driven snow. That’s a fact jack!! Did have a parking ticket tho, paid it. Done deal. Can’t judge everyone from your own record. LOL.😃

        Saturday, 10 February 2018, 3:49 pm
    • Bull
The sheriffs department in this town is as corrupt and as broken as can be. From the disgusting corruption of the Dawn center to the bribes and coverups of crooked duputies, the entire department is in need of fumigation.

      Friday, 9 February 2018, 9:15 pm
  • Not all of these businesses are operating illegally. Arrest the criminals and leave the other small business owners alone and allow us to have our fun. Of course that wouldn’t sit well with Hard Rock, but we don’t care. We choose to spend our money in our own county. It’s a place to go when you just want to get out for a little while and a lot of us don’t want to drive the highways, just to go to some Smoke Filled Room (Hard Rock), that takes our money so fast that I cant we cant even enjoy ourselves…PLEASE go artest the criminals and LEAVE US ALONE.

    Friday, 9 February 2018, 9:43 am
  • gambling? i would love to see the evidence. money laundering? yeah right. I bet they never got any complaints, they just show up and its a shake down. other sweepstakes gaming places have won lawsuits against the city for these illegal shakedown tactics. why no arrests???? what crime were they suspected of committing? where is your evidence?

    Friday, 9 February 2018, 7:35 am
  • This is really stupid. These game rooms were not hurting anyone it was just a place for people to go play and have fun and meet people. There was no drinking no partying no drugs. Why don’t you go after their real criminals in this County not these little game rooms that make it a fun safe place to go to and have fun without drinking and driving. It’s our money and we should be aloud to spend it how we want. I hope the sheriff’s office opens their eyes and leave these gamerooms alone and focus on more important things.

    Friday, 9 February 2018, 1:04 am
  • It is a real shame that the Game Rooms in Hernando County are being closed down. I did comment on the Sheriff’s FB page and I was told…plain and simple….IT IS AGAINST THE LAW…IT’S ILLEGAL GAMBLING! And, they did promise to make every one of them a “visit” in the near future. At a very sad time in my life, losing both my Husband and my Son, if it weren’t for the Game Rooms I probably wouldn’t be here typing this message. My Son and my Husband were my best friends, I didn’t have an “outside” friends at all. An elderly widow introduced me to the Game Rooms and it was the best thing that could have happened to me, and I really mean that. It gave me a place to go where I could relax, make new friends, (many of whom were also widows and widowers), have the excitement of a “big win”….yea, like ten bucks, and I had such a great time. My Birthday was celebrated, I had a place to celebrate when it was Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and the best of all the Holidays was Halloween. We dressed up and a great time was had by all. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday I was given a hot meal, all of the free water, soda and coffee that you could drink and even dessert was served. It wasn’t the food as much as it was the fact that I didn’t have to sit at home three nights a week and eat dinner alone. I met so many great people and when I left the Game Room to go home, I was in such a good mood and so happy!!! My wish is that the “powers that be” work on a way to keep them all open. If they have to get licensed, do it, if they have to pay a fee to stay open, do it, whatever it will take but please, “DON’T CLOSE THE GAME ROOMS DOWN”. At least let them stay open while you contact the necessary people and figure out how YOU/THEY/THEM can let them stay open. P.S. One more thing….in the four years that I went to the Game Room every weekend of the 52 weeks in the year, and there were usually 40-50 people there, NOT ONCE WERE THE HERNANDO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE CALLED THERE FOR ANY TYPE OF DISTURBANCE OR FIGHTING OR DO REMOVE DRUNKS OR OTHERS FROM THE ESTABLISHMENTS!!! Sorry for writing my book here, but some people do not know anything about the game rooms so this is just a little educational post and also to tell anyone who reads my post……how much the Game Rooms mean to me!!!

    • JOSEPHINE
The fact isn’t they are illegal. We don’t have to agree that they should or shouldn’t be, but we must follow the law.
If you do not agree with the law you should take the correct avenue to get the law changed. Until then the sheriffs office has a job to do. So if you get in trouble or the game place does they should accept the consequence of their actions.

      Friday, 9 February 2018, 6:39 am
      • David, the fact is the Sheriff is corrupt. And the people should not obey a law that corrupt politicians in this state put in place because one of thier own got caught stealing from the veterans and was forced to resign.

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 12:43 pm
      • David….If you would have read the message that I posted on the Sheriff’s thread you would have seen that I AGREE that they are illegal. I was simply explaining to people who have never been to a Game Room what it was all about. I know the difference between LEGAL AND ILLEGAL.

        Saturday, 10 February 2018, 8:18 am
    • The hard rock is less than an hour away

      Friday, 9 February 2018, 8:04 am
      • Really, well would you want to give all the people that would like to drive an hour away gas money then? I think not right?

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 12:23 pm
        • If they have money to lose gambling they have money for gas.

          Friday, 9 February 2018, 1:27 pm
  • Good job HCSO close them all down and i know you will

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:58 pm
  • Now that’s your tax dollars being spent to combat harden criminals……….Let’s get the bingo halls too. HCSO should concentrate on real thugs that are rampant in our county but I guess senior citizens don’t run as fast nor do they carry guns. Well there you go!

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:43 pm
  • Illegal laundering and criminal activity right. Don’t you mean HCSO wanting thier take. That’s just the excuse they use to steal thier money.

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 8:34 pm
    • Wanted their take of what? The Sheriff’s office is funded through property taxes…

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:58 pm
      • ^^^^^ Re^^^^^^ mind your business… your probably some failing attorney in hernando county or a fired officer in hernando and now your sitting at home responding to everyones comments… your a bum, and you dont know ##it. the sheriffs are theifs, thats why they made someone quit about 4 years ago that was a high ranking because that officer was stealing from charity money given to the sheriffs office… so RE get off internet and go get a job, i cant even read news in this county without you here putting your nonsense in everyones comment… BOTTOM LINE “MIND YOUR BUSINESS” and leave the old ladys alone… there harmless……….

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 8:59 am
        • Ditto hes a pissed cop….Good one nunyour bussiness…

          Friday, 9 February 2018, 3:22 pm

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 9:10 am
    • Way to go joe

      Friday, 9 February 2018, 5:21 pm
  • Good job Sgt. Scott L

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 8:10 pm
  • I don’t see what the issue is. these places aren’t harming anyone. they give older people a place to go hang out and a lot of times they feed them. I worked at one years ago and some of the customers were just lonely and liked the atmosphere. give me a break.

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 7:47 pm
    • They are largely used for money laundering. AKA money made illegally elsewhere and then funneled through as business expenses in order to appear legitimate.

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:59 pm
      • Really then I guess they should shut down the Hard Rock also with your logic. But that will not happen since they pay off the state to keep running thier operation. At the same time they pay off the state to shut down small places like this since it takes away from thier profits.

        Thursday, 8 February 2018, 11:36 pm
        • Umm, Joe, you DO REALIZE that the Seminole Tribe owns the Hard Rock right?? I seriously doubt they have any connections to these small local establishments….

          Friday, 9 February 2018, 5:09 am
          • Yes I’m aware they own the Hard Rock. And yes they have a connection in keeping the small sweepstakes shutdown. They don’t want the competition.

            Friday, 9 February 2018, 12:14 pm
            • Really…you think they are competition for the HardRock…you are clueless..that is so funny…you need a brain to start with…cause there is no competition with these small gaming places and the Hard Rock….wow you are really lost

              Saturday, 10 February 2018, 9:04 pm
            • Joe you really are stupid or just like to hear yourself. These little places don’t affect the tribe at all

              Saturday, 10 February 2018, 9:11 pm
      • the problem is the sheriff is not getting his cur from them.its called a shake down.

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 9:11 am
      • I think we get what money laundering is are you sittin in your patrol car on our dime playing on your phone….

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 3:24 pm
        • That was for “re”

          Friday, 9 February 2018, 3:26 pm
    • Weed never harmed anyone either ………but that doesn’t stop rudimentary minds from keeping it illegal.

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 11:06 pm
    • If that’s they case then they could do it legally where no monetary prize is awarded. If it was really just about a place to go to get away this wouldn’t be a problem

      Friday, 9 February 2018, 6:41 am
  • They need to check local clubs like the moose

    Thursday, 8 February 2018, 7:12 pm
    • If you have a tip, send it to HCSO. Don’t just post hearsay on the internet

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 9:59 pm

    • Well said. I bet they was smokin that wacky weed too.

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 8:40 pm
    • The ignorance is strong. Maybe if you would try to form a more complex thought regarding why these cafes get taken down you would understand it. Money laundering is taking money made illegally and sending it through a ‘legitimate’ business in order to hide it. That is why the search warrant was issued.

      Thursday, 8 February 2018, 10:01 pm
      • so why aint sheriff al in prision for the 1.3 million he got cought stealing?or all the money he is laundering through the dawn center?so explain that while you talk about ignorant.explain a decorated deputy that was there i think 25 years getting fired while al was covering up his theift.the sheriff is a crook and got cought but where is all the public out cry over that?i can give a flying eff about senior citizens spendi g their money and time on playing sweepstakes.but when a sheriff is stealing money nobody cares?real criminals driving around town shooting people, but the sheriffs office is busy chasing down jazzys on 19 while they are trying to enjoy a day out.also what about the sheriff bulling rnrf who do you think is pYing for that

        Friday, 9 February 2018, 9:21 am
      • Oh shut up re we smell the bacon through the phones and this is why and this why really get from under the oak tree and go pull over a speeder like that run on sentence..
