Suspicious Substance Prompts Hazmat Response to Challenger K-8

UPDATE: 5:50 P.M. – School officials have confirmed that a small amount of powder was discovered in a filing cabinet and they were instructed by law enforcement to have a Hazmat Team remove the substance.

SPRING HILL –  A Hazmat Unit responded to Challenger K-8 today after officials say a suspicious substance was located by staff in a supply room.

Hernando County Fire Rescue Spokesperson, Alex Lopez says the substance could not be identified at the scene and was subsequently turned over to the Sheriff’s Office for further analysis. Lopez further advised that deputies field tested the substance for known narcotics but all tests came back negative.

Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Michael Terry says “We collected the item in question” and then referred us to the school board for further details.

There were no evacuations as a result of the incident.

We are waiting on a response from the school board regarding the incident.

  • so some one finds some spilled coffee creamer or sugar in a drawer and they call in the hazmat team? talk about paranoia. i can see if a letter came in with a threat or similar but randomly finding this and going defcon is excessive. hopefully they never go down the baking isle at the store, there would be a full on panic.
