Teens Charged with Armed Robbery After Botched Marijuana Heist
SPRING HILL – A former Weeki Wachee High School student is behind bars today, after officials say he and another teen robbed an acquaintance at gunpoint, for what they thought was a backpack containing marijuana.
According to reports, on the night of Sunday September 27th, 18-year-old Nicolas Dane Swafford and two friends were driving westbound on Spring Hill Drive, when Swafford noticed an acquaintance riding a bicycle. Swafford stated the he had “issues” with the victim so he told the driver to pull over at DeCarlo Ave. When he was exiting the car, Swafford stated that he was going to take the victim’s backpack because he usually carries marijuana. Both Swafford and a co-defendant (Whose Identity we are not releasing at this time, due to his age) approached the victim. At that time, the co-defendant produced a handgun, pointed it at the victim, and demanded that he turn over the backpack. The victim complied and the pair ran back to the vehicle and fled the area. According to the driver, who was not charged, Swafford and the co-defendant searched the backpack for marijuana but all they found was school papers and a bottle of rubbing alcohol.
It is unknown what led investigators to Swafford and his co-defendant’s arrest but according to officials, during an interview Swafford admitted to his part in the crime. Swafford is charged with 1 count of Armed Robbery and remains behind bars at this time on $50,000 bond.
In addition to the new charge, Swafford’s bond has now been revoked related to a previous charge of Possession of Marijuana.
