Thieves Distract Clerk to Steal $1,000 in Merchandise, Possibly Connected to Recent Vehicle Burglaries
NEW PORT RICHEY – Pasco County Sheriff’s Deputies are searching for at least two men responsible for stealing $1,000 in merchandise and gift cards from a local Walmart. And the suspects may be responsible for other recent crimes.
According to officials, two men walked into the Walmart located at 8745 SR-54 on Sunday and brought $500 worth of merchandise to a register. The men asked the clerk to load $500 on four separate gift cards and then distracted the clerk by asking for a pack of cigars. While the clerk was turned away, one of the suspects pushed the print receipt button on the register, finalizing the sale. At that moment, both suspects fled the store with the merchandise and drove away in a white Nissan sedan.
One of the men pictured in the Walmart surveillance video resembles the suspect who broke into a vehicle at Discovery Point Day Care last Tuesday, however, officials haven’t confirmed if the crimes are related.
The vehicles involved in both crimes are described as white Nissans, however, the vehicle used in the day care burglaries is a small SUV – the Walmart vehicle is described as a sedan.
In addition, both crimes took place on or near SR-54 and less than 8 miles apart.
Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office 800-706-2488 and reference case #17-049063.
