Three Injured After Car Overturns and Crashes into Home

SPRING HILL – At least three people were injured after a vehicle plowed through trees, overturned, and then crashed into a home on Gifford Drive.

Fire Rescue responded to 10276 Gifford Drive where they discovered heavy damage to the home, the vehicle, and three injured occupants.

The extent of the injuries is unknown but we do know that two patients were transported to a local hospital and a third was transported to Bayonet Point Hospital in Hudson.

There are no reports of injuries from inside the home.

Neighbors say they heard a loud boom and ran outside to find a car upside down and a large hole in the side of the home’s garage.

The County Building Department will inspect the home to determine if the residents are able to remain inside.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

  • First, doing 40 mph in a residential area when speed limit was 30 mph “technically” means you were speeding. (10mph over). So that takes care of that. Second, if you had not been speeding, you may of had more time to react when these kids ran out in front you. Third, if you had no brakes, you would of hit that house with more force than you did without skid marks on the road. Pretty sure the officers can determine your rate of speed by skid marks and the force of impact. Just slow done and use common sense. 30 mph in a residential zone, to me, is to fast anyways. Mariner Blvd is 45! Think about that.

    Saturday, 23 July 2016, 2:48 am
  • Ok…. If the brakes failed, then WHY are there skid marks on both the road and grass??? Dont see any mail boxes… Plus looks like you were going fast enough to snap those trees!!! Just admit it, you messed up & were too busy talking to Will & the other kid in the car & you crashed….. End of story… Hope everyone is ok!!!

  • Wait until you see what those 2 Hospitals are going to charge you. Both are HCA owned and have a history of up coding ER accidents. Why didn’t Hernando Fire go to the Brooksville or Spring Hill Hospitals. Maybe someone should look into that.

    Monday, 18 July 2016, 7:44 pm
  • “Hit the speed bump fast enough to bottom out and rupture the oil pan” is likely way more than 40 mph.

Brianna received 2 tickets in June…DL not carried + Speeding 52/30.
Owes $243.00 on tickets plus Traffic School. Public Records.
Some lessons are harder than others.
Glad no one was seriously injured. Close call.

    • where did you go to find this info? It’s telling that this “experienced” drive recently got ticketed. If it was my kid they would not be driving until they paid the fines and did the class. I wonder if she has had other tickets.

      Monday, 18 July 2016, 11:03 am
  • Brianna….Liar.From someone who was literally on the next street..YOU were speeding. Ask the two boys on the bikes that You Guys yelled to get out of the way cause you were speeding up and down the road. And Lisa…Your daughter is a liar…her breaks didn’t give out, she was being an idiot and was speeding she’s SO LUCKY she didn’t hit one of those kids on the bike. You’re so lucky girl….you got lucky this time and you’re SO lucky it wasn’t my nephews on that bike. You’re a liar for saying that your breaks gave out. You KNOW You were speeding. Just stop

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 11:19 pm
  • Brianna any one can look at the scene and with half a brain can figure out what happened. Be happy no one died, learn a valuable lesson, and move on with life.

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 9:35 pm
  • Brianna you need to quit commenting on this website….prayers are with those injures

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 8:30 pm
  • The young lady needs to go back to New York, like the rest of trash living in Spring Hell.

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 7:50 pm
  • Thatguy, you must be the boy that was in the car with her, anyway, drove by there today, smooth road, she could have killed someone coming on belltower, since she “missed” the stop sign, and yes she had to be going like a bat out of hell to do all that damage nice smooth road, didn’t feel or see any small hills. Lucky girl she didn’t kill someone . Let’s face it she can’t DRIVE. No detective, just have common sense unlike some including her,. Have a nice safe evening now, ya hear

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 7:33 pm
  • I didn’t realize there are so many detectives in spring hill lol. I wish i could determine the cause of accident by reading an article.

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 3:04 pm
  • You really think insurance is going to cover this??

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 2:36 pm
  • Brianna, just stop posting comments. The more you say, the deeper the hole gets. You’re too young to know very much about driving and the mechanics of a car. What you state happened is not feasible, period. As for your insurance………… will probably be cancelled after this. That’s something else you wouldn’t know at your age. They investigate – they will know (as the police do) that taking out mail boxes and trees still didn’t slow you down enough to avoid knocking out cement blocks in that garage wall. That tells them the speed was faster than the 40 you claim.

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 11:24 am
  • Brianna jurkofsky the cops never said they believed your brakes went out and believed that’s what caused the accident. You can lie to yourself and try and spin it anyway you want. If you weren’t speeding you wouldn’t have lost control of the car and every car has an emergency brake. Every word you say on here makes you look stupid. Nobody believes your ridiculous rants anyways. You have no business having a drivers license and could have killed someone!

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 10:31 am
  • At 40 mph if you hit two mail boxes it won’t make your car flip so that wasn’t the case. She was probably screwing around on her phone or doing something to go off the road then Over correct making her car flip.

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 9:15 am
  • Please be grateful there were no serious injuries. Cars and property can be replaced, lives can not.

Believe it or not they will be able to determine if it was mechanical or driver error, how fast the vehicle was going, etc.

Assuming anything…well we all know what assuming does right? Being viscous does nothing but show ones true self. Be aware of your own karma and let karma be done.

    Sending prayers to all involved.

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 8:55 am
  • Yeah have to agree heather.skid marks from the road to the grass were you lost traction and skidded into the house.believe brakes were fine. Its speed and momentum that were the problem

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 8:44 am
  • The tires look completely bald! It is utterly irresponsibl to get behind the wheel of a vehicle in disrepair. Then make the conscious decision to speed in a residential area! I just hope this ends up a learning experience and not wasted to arrogance.

    Sunday, 17 July 2016, 4:22 am

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 7:54 pm
  • 17 yr old driver states that the car has bad brakes BUT it was the only car she had for the day. WOW! I am not getting the feeling that she is sorry or showing any remorse. P.S. There’s a reason that lawyers tell you not to say anything and to let them do the talking.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 7:37 pm
    • IF you still get to keep your driver’s license, please don’t drive in my neighborhood.

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 7:39 pm
  • Ok I have a daughter about the same age and let’s just say … They know how to make shit up. Little girl you left skid marks. Breaks were working as good as they could. When you are a new driver and flying down the road you can’t expect breaks to stop you on a dime. If this was my daughter I would hem her up not be defending her. Once again spring hills finest. My daughter pays over 300 a month for insurance. If she was irresponsible enough to be driving like that, but she is not insured.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 5:48 pm
  • The speed limit on Gifford is 30. So admitting you were doing 40 puts you 100% at fault for everything that happened. Doesn’t matter if your breaks or entire car stopped working. The skid marks from the road into the grass pretty much prove that your breaks were just fine.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 5:40 pm
  • Mrs. Lisa & Brianna – Just thank god that you and your friends are o.k.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 5:15 pm
  • Whoops, lots of typos, sorry, have to add one more thing, Gets on here, calls us ignorant and is real quick to use that lovely F””” word, yep, 17, raised with lots of resoect. I wish there was a fine for everyone that uses that word. Oh well, I am sure we will all hear from her again, but she should stop digging her hole any deeper. After all it hit the news on tv, as was stated in prior post. STay safe people, bad drivers out there!!

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 3:58 pm
  • I just think that everyone should be glad, that all involved survived this accident. If she was doing something wrong, I’m sure she will learn from it.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 3:53 pm
  • No not nasty, she admitted to “missing a stop sign”, that’s your first ckue, skid msrks= brakes working??, has a real bad attitude about ruining those people’s home, glad she didn’t kill someone with her dangerous driving. No sympathy for careless, irresponsible drivers who take no responsibility for their choices. Don’t forget doing 40 in a residential area. Need I say more. Brianna grow up, sounds like mama needs to do the same. Obviously believes she has a teenager that is perfect and never tells a lie, as mama wasn’t in the car at time of crash. @jbiggs, well said!!!!

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 3:37 pm
  • Wow you people are nasty if you stop and read the woman who was driving said her brakes gave out after she tried stopping because there was kids in the road. Sending Healing Prayers glad to hear you all will be okay and are home now.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 2:57 pm
    • thank you so much. my brakes gave out on me. the car has bad brakes but it was the only car i had for the day. im getting a ticket for the accident and if the man needs help fixing his home, i would be more than happy to help him. im taking full responsibility for this accident

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 4:57 pm
  • Slow down and put the damn phones down people !

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 2:52 pm
  • This place has to be the rollover capital of the entire country,Where I moved from rollover accidents were a very very rare event and the counties were more heavily populated then is the case here but rollovers crashes are happening here every week, It’s crazy because rolling a car is generally not easy unless your speeding or driving is a dangerous manor, I’ve been driving over 50 years and have never had a accident or received a traffic ticket. This place it nuts.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 2:33 pm
    • okay well im sorry that this has never happened to you. but please do not assume stuff.

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 4:56 pm
  • young inexperienced driver going way too fast. Brakes or no brakes this was a high speed crash, I smell lawsuit. From home owner who’s repairs will run into the 10s of thousands. To the other cars that were damaged, to the injured passengers. Hope that driver gets a job to help pay for this.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 2:30 pm
    • actually my insurance is paying for it. and i am an experienced driver. and if he wants help fixing his house and his cars, i’ll gladly do it.

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 4:55 pm
      • You don’t know yet if your insurance is paying for it. It takes many days for the investigation, determining fault, and damages. Plus there is the police investigation and determination. The insurance companies and police are very experienced in this. Keep your fingers crossed “experienced” (at 17!) driver.

        Saturday, 16 July 2016, 6:35 pm
        • “Experienced” at 17?? NOT EVEN IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS, young lady. You have a LOT to learn before you can possibly be “experienced” at ANYTHING.. lol

          Monday, 18 July 2016, 4:43 am
          • BRA-VO!!

            Monday, 18 July 2016, 3:41 pm
  • Ps looks like long skid marks also,so it seems as the brakes were working

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 1:46 pm
    • i lost control of the car. the brakes did stop working but believe what you want.

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 4:54 pm
  • Well lisa/ mom, pretty sure a broken gas gauge or starter senser is not the cause of that crash, also i find it hard to believe that a car can go through 2 mailboxes bushes ect flip over and smash through a block home at only 40 m.p.h i guess it may be possible but not very plausable.glad they are all safe, feel bad for the home owners.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 1:39 pm

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 1:25 pm
  • Your mom already stated on here st the top you were doing 40mph so take that up with het

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 1:21 pm
    • im getting a ticket for the accident. the cops understand that my brakes gave out. they already said that’s what probably caused the accident. do you have anything else you want to say? because you dont know anything about me or that car.

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 4:53 pm
  • >Lisa. Everyone is so ready to jump in after seeing a story and having no idea what happened? I’m glad all are well and yes it sucks that a car is totalled and a house is damaged but all involved sound like they are ok and that’s the important part. Everyone needs to be not so fast to judge. Someday you will be on here and the target of the ignorant rages …. Unless your perfect stop throwing stones!!! No I’m not a family member nor do I know them. Just glad all are ok!

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 12:43 pm
  • I have to say, I have been driving for 30 years and believe me I drove some junkers in the past and not once ever has my brakes gone out on me. It happens but rare and she said her sisters went out too? Either not maintaining their cars or just very unlucky.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 12:38 pm
  • Driver and mom. don’t respond to ignorant people. Post the report when you get accident due to faulty breaks, Carma will come their way.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 10:49 am
  • I’ll bet the gentleman who owned those two vintage automobiles thought they’d be safe in his garage.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 10:31 am
  • The driver says she wasn’t speeding, she says she was going 40 pmh. This is a residential street (like mine) and 40 is going too fast. There may have been a mechanical failure, that’s easy enough to determine by a mechanic. Just stop saying “not speeding, going 40”. I doubt there are speed limit signs stating 40 mph on that street.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 10:01 am
  • Amen to the fact the kids are all going to be ok. You negiative people need to grow up, and learn to be careing. You never know, maybe one day you may experiance some type of heartach about someone you love.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 9:14 am
  • I was there during this accident and all you could hear is screeching tires before they hit the house it didn’t sound like breaks were failing to me. Make all the excuses you like but you were speeding in a neighborhood with children playing outside and your dam lucky you didn’t kill someone or yourself! I just hope you learned something from all of this but probably not

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 7:46 am

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 7:35 am
  • Glad you are ok Brianna
You do not have to explain yourself to a bunch idiots
They do not listen nor read

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 6:13 am
    • thank you so much, i know what happened. the “screeching” they heard was me trying to press on the brakes and that’s when they went out. but i bet you all of those people commenting are over 50 and have a “perfect record”. the car i was driving got recalled about two years ago and last month we got the car checked out and they said the breaks were fine. well this month the car stalled twice on me while i was pressing on the brakes. i understand i shouldn’t of been driving the car if it had brake problems but it was the only car i had to drive that day.

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 4:52 pm
      • 1) Your mom says you were doing 40. The speed limit on the street is 30. That’s speeding.

        2) Based on the skid marks prior to you taking out the trees, crashing into the garage and flipping the vehicle, I have to wonder: How do you make skid mark without working brakes? And even at 40 MPH, I’m wondering if you may have been going faster, to have sufficient momentum to knock down a block wall and flip the car.

        3) You admit you ran a stop sign.

        4) You admit you were aware the car had what appears to be significant problems and perhaps it shouldn’t have been on the road to begin with.

        5) Were you on your way to work? Or maybe going to do volunteer work? If not, you did not have to drive, you choose to drive. And the results of numerous bad choices by YOU, has resulted in a homeowner having their garage nearly demolished, damage one of the cars in the garage and had trees ripped out of the ground as your speeding car crashed into and over them.

        6) Maybe the judge will do the community a favor and suspend your drivers license for a couple of years. In the meantime you could learn to appreciate walking, riding a bike or using the local bus line, for you transportation needs.

        7) You were ‘lucky’ this time. You trashed a home, wrecked a car (possibly two, depending on the damage done to the car in the garage), and walked away. It could have been much worse. You could have ran over someone. You could have killed someone. But I get the feeling from your flippant remarks, that you don’t care about anyone but yourself? You’re more concerned about rationalizing your actions and getting all testy because people are calling you on your actions and the damage you did.

        8) Now the question you need to ask yourself is this: What can I learn from my obvious mistakes and selfish actions? What can I do to be a better, responsible driver? Driving is NOT a right. It is a responsibility. Perhaps you lack the maturity to hand such a responsibility.

        9) And yes, I am over 50 and do, in fact, have a perfect driving record. In fact, since moving to Spring Hill, my reaction times have sharpened tremendously because there are so many distracted, confused, oblivious and simply horrible, drivers on the road. Rare is the day when there isn’t a serious accident in this area.

        10) The streets you were speeding on are in a residential neighborhood. There are people walking, riding bikes, using mobility scooters, kids playing basketball, in other words; living and doing what’s normal in a residential neighborhood. None of which should require them to be risking their lives because of speeding, irresponsible, drivers.

        Saturday, 16 July 2016, 7:28 pm
        • Very well said, Mr Lee.

I’m calling BS on both she & her mom’s excuses of how this happened. The driver HAD to be speeding (over 40 MPH) in a residential area where speed limits are 30 mph, (in fact, some residential areas are only 25 mph),
          to cause so much damage!

She and her mom both just gave evidence to LEO’s in their comments on a public website (RNRF). smh

I hope they throw the book at her, she could have KILLED INNOCENT PEOPLE WITH HER NEGLIGENCE/ACTIONS!!!

          Monday, 18 July 2016, 4:29 am
  • Brianna, your mom says you were traveling at 40 ish mph. Your mother goes on to explain your car had mechanical issues. Faulty gas guage, stalling, and starter issues. You stated, “you missed a stop sign”.
Question, did your emergency break fail as well?
If the car was in disrepair, why we’re you driving it?
Is there any chance you will take ownership and responsibilty by acknowledging you made a mistake? You knew the vehicle had problems yet you continued to drive it.
    This was avoidable!

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 6:07 am
  • Brianna,

Stop defending yourself. Those that are smart enough to scroll and read all the comments will and those that just want to get reactions out of others just leave comments. Don’t take each one personally and if you can’t, stop coming onto the site. It was an accident-thank goodness no one was seriously injured.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 5:23 am
  • So thankful that the children in this residential neighborhood weren’t hit. Very thankful for all the Guardian Angels in this scenario. Sucks to be a homeowner these day, collectible cars in the garage (ouch).

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 4:07 am
  • Ok, to set the record straight here…these insurance companies are VERY GOOD at what they do, as are the cops who investigate these horrific accidents. From what the eye witness says they saw, she was all over the place which more than likely means she was driving wayyy too fast and there WILL be tracks, and skid marks to prove how fast she was going. The insurance co. WILL have the final word on that from law efforcement. ALSO, the insurance co.WILL have their own inspector/appraiser go over that car with a fine tooth comb. If they find nothing wrong with those brakes, to include no air in the brakes lines, then her story won’t hold up. Last, if their car insurance is the minimal required by law…they are up a creek without a paddle, because it won’t cover 1/2 of the property damage done to that house and those classic cars…much less the airborne car. Good luck with all that ‘Mom’. Better hope your daughter is telling the truth…because most of it can be proven. And if that homeowner IS told the house is not structurally sound, and they can’t stay in it until the repairs are done, THEY may be out of a place to live for a long while. And ‘young daughter’, it is NOT a common thing for brakes to ‘just go out’, so don’t even imply it is. YEAH, it can happen, but that means they were low to begin with, or had a leaky line somewhere, or worn out pads. ALL meaning they should have been checked and fixed! PERIOD. You don’t sit back and let crap like this happen that could very well kill someone, or leave a family with no place to go. So STOP driving cars with bad brakes. Stop making excuses. Let’s hope you and your friends actually LEARNED something from this.

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 3:12 am
  • Well driver I can beleive your brakes couldve blown out but I’ve never heard of a stearing wheel locking while the cars driving but I believe it could’ve happened, but on the bright side everyone’s okay

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 2:21 am
  • Tom can you tell us if the driver was given any tickets?

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 12:32 am
  • I call BS to the driver. No way she was going the speed limit. If the brakes had a recall nobody but a buffoon would keep driving the car. I call BS on that too. Hopefully the driver got several tickets including a careless driving and speeding. To bad she didn’t get locked up!

    Saturday, 16 July 2016, 12:26 am
  • I agree With Lena W… What is Going On Here In Hernando County!!!
I have Lived Here In Hernando since 1985 and in Florida since 1970…

    because of This PokeMon Thing!!

    Friday, 15 July 2016, 10:49 pm
    • The driver of that car needs to pay for ALL the damages, not the homeowner.

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 1:43 pm
  • okay let me just tell you all something. i was the driver in that car and no we were not playing pokemon or going fast. so stop saying rude things towards me and my friends. i missed a stop sign, and there was a smll hill in the road and my brakes stopped working and my wheel locked. my sister’s cars brakes gave out on me while i was driving. who knew that people could be so ignorant.

    Friday, 15 July 2016, 10:18 pm
    • Germaine Major, I live on Gifford Dr. near the stop sign, and you can count yourself lucky you did not hit my child. You would never drive a car again. The speed limit is not 40 and slow down before you kill somebody.

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 6:24 pm
  • I guess she now knows you can’t catch a Pokémon at 60mph…that whole situation is danked up

    Friday, 15 July 2016, 8:11 pm
  • Feel sorry for the homeowner, that’s one crazy driver, can’t wait to see why this happened ! Do hope all are ok, but this is getting ridiculous.

    Friday, 15 July 2016, 7:13 pm

      Saturday, 16 July 2016, 8:11 am
      • its called the e brake for a reason if that was the case. Ive seen many crashes. It does not take a team of crash specialists to analyze this one. two words. Residential area. … now learn from this.

        Sunday, 17 July 2016, 9:24 pm
      • then YOU, my dear, need more driver’s ed. classes.

        Monday, 18 July 2016, 3:32 pm

    Friday, 15 July 2016, 5:18 pm
  • Crazy. I live right around the corner. People go way too fast trying to cut through the neighborhood to get from Northcliffe to Elgin.

    Friday, 15 July 2016, 5:17 pm
  • Wonder how bad the classic car got from flying bricks. I have never seen so many roll over accidents. Used to live in mountainous area up north and never seen cars over turned like thgey do here on flat ground. Slow down and pay attention people.

    Friday, 15 July 2016, 5:12 pm

      • Your own mother stated you were going about 40 in a 30mph residential zone. And you wrote you went through Stop sign. 2 citations there; and hopefully when they investigate they will be able to show that breaks were inoperable. Good luck…

      Friday, 15 July 2016, 10:21 pm
      • Your digging yourself a hole. ” brakes gave out and my wheel locked.” Doing 40 mph in a residential area, Saw pictures by the stop sign where you hit the bump in the road after flying through a stop sign, caught air and lost control. Mechanics are going to test your vehicles brakes and steering. If it was worn brakes and they ask your mechanic about his inspections and if you refused to repair them. Don’t keep talking about it or you and your mother will be paying a lot to repair all the damage.

    • i am the mother of the driver I just wanted to set the record straight seeing how you all think you know what happened i thought i tell you the truth! My daughter was driving down grifford aprox at or around 40 mph when my daughter saw two kids in the street and went to slow down and the breaks would not work there was a small bump in the road in which the car hit then hit two mailboxes causing the car to flip and hit the side of the house . there have been recalls on this car in the past in which the car dealer had to have fixed the starter censor in the car. the car gas gage had stop working properly within the last week or so and was stalling out. we were going to address those issue today when my daughter got into the accident. thank the good lord all three occupants are alive all were banged up pretty good and very lucky to be alive. all were discharge from the hospital and are home with there families.that’s what happened so please stop with false accusations and be grateful it wasn’t you or your that crash.

      • Then you should contact 10 News and the cops cuz they say different.
A woman ran a stop sign, lost control of her car and then struck a house Friday in Spring Hill, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Brianna Nicole Jurkofsky, 17, was northbound on Gifford Drive at a high rate of speed nearing Belltower Street when she drove past a stop sign, bottomed out, lost control of her car that then began to spin, hit two mailboxes and a tree, then struck a house in the 10000 block of Gifford Drive.
She was taken to Oak Hill Hospital along with a passenger. Another passenger was taken to Bayonet Point Hospital.

      • 40 MPH seems fast for a residential neighborhood. And if the driver is aware of issues with the vehicle and continues to drive it, I’m pretty sure the driver is admitting negligence.

        Saturday, 16 July 2016, 9:49 am
      • The speed limit is 30 mph. My father lives four houses down.

        Saturday, 16 July 2016, 12:29 pm
      • Seems like her car was totally unsafe to drive, yet, she drove it, anyway. 40 mph on Gifford. Is that the limit, with kids around?

        Saturday, 16 July 2016, 1:36 pm
      • Well, I guess you shouldn’t have let her drive the car since it was unsafe, so you were negligent. Besides, it is quite unwise to let new drivers, teenagers, drive with friends in the car until they demonstrate at least one year of incident-free responsible driving. If you want her to be a safer driver then send her for private driving lessons as well as the Sheriff’s Teen Driver class. My kids had both and the Sheriff’s class saved my daughter’s life a few years ago since she learned emergency handling. Driver’s ed isn’t enough.
