Three Orlando Area Men Charged in Triple Smash and Grab Burglaries

BROOKSVILLE – Three Orlando area men are behind bars this evening, held on bonds as high as $145,000, after being formally charged in connection with Thursday’s early morning string of cellphone store burglaries.

RNRF reported the brazen smash and grab burglaries after the men were caught hiding at a local carwash on Cortez Blvd (ORIGINAL REPORT).

Joshua Lewis Wilkerson, 20, Cory Pittman, 19, and Daqwon Markes James, 22, each face 3-counts of Unarmed Commercial Burglary. James faces charges of fleeing and eluding, after failing to stop for law enforcement. Wilkerson and Pittman face additional charges related to the burglaries.

A similar crime spree came to an end in Citrus County last month after six suspects, who also live in the Orlando Area, were charged in connection with several dealership burglaries across Polk, Citrus, and Hernando Counties.

Some residents say criminals are targeting Hernando County, due to its policy not engage in vehicle pursuits, unless a forcible felony has occurred. The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office stopped engaging in pursuits after the tragic death of Deputy John Mecklenburg who was killed during a high-speed pursuit in 2011.

BROOKSVILLE – The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a string of overnight commercial burglaries that targeted at least three mobile wireless retailers.

According to sources, around 3:00 a.m. this morning, three suspects smashed through the glass doors of Cricket Wireless, AT&T Wireless, and Verizon Wireless; all of which are located on Cortez Blvd, in the Mariner Square Shopping Plaza.

Deputies located the suspect’s vehicle, a black Camaro, traveling in the area of Cortez Blvd and Nightwalker Road. Sources say spike strips were deployed to disable the vehicle but that information has not been confirmed. Once the vehicle came to a stop all three suspects fled on foot.

Around 9:30 a.m., RNRF received information that three black males were knocking on doors in the Highpoint Subdivision, located just a few miles east of where the suspect vehicle was abandoned. RNRF spoke to the gate guard who said the three men had just walked eastbound towards Mariner Blvd. RNRF utilized the access road that runs parallel to Cortez Blvd, where we soon spotted the trio sitting on a bench at the Weeki Weshee Car Wash. At the same time, several deputies pulled in and made contact with the suspects. While deputies were conducting their interviews, the car wash manager told RNRF that the three men entered the building and were acting extremely nervous, prior to our arrival.

None of the men provided identification to deputies during the investigation, so a supervisor responded with a Rapid I.D. fingerprint reader. Law Enforcement Officers utilize the device in the field, to scan a suspect’s fingerprints, which is then run through AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System).

It is not known at this time if a match was discovered in today’s burglary case; however, moments after running the scan, all three suspects were taken into custody and transported to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning.

A representative with Verizon could not comment on the details of the case; however, he did say that the men were unable to gain entry into the store. The front door and a side window were severely damaged but it did not completely shatter.

Carlos Santiago, owner of Cricket Wireless say the thieves got away with at least $5,000 dollars-worth of merchandise; including, iPhones, iPads, and Galaxy display models.

AT&T store clerk, Sarah Dahns, tells RNRF that she received a call early this morning that a burglary had occurred at her store. Dahns says she doesn’t believe the thieves got away with a lot of merchandise but she was unable to provide an estimate. “We’ve got a lot of cleaning up to do,” says Dahns but she was happy to hear that the suspects may be in custody.

Officials have not released a statement regarding the burglaries but sources say the suspects possibly traveled from the Orlando area, just like the suspects who conducted the organized automotive dealership thefts, several weeks ago.

We will continue to bring more on this story as it develops.

Did the Sheriff’s office take a community poll on this or maybe it was brought up at a County Commission meeting ? Where did you obtain this information that residents are speculating?

  • Crazy b, only reason they did get busted is because they’re from out of town. Every day I see a person who DRIVES DRUNK WITH NO DRIVER’S LICENSE but because they’ve lived in brooksville so long they’re part of good old boy system here & nothing is done by leo.
They & their friends terrorize a neighborhood with no consequences.

The unfair use of statements about race to try to influence the actions or attitudes of a particular group of people

I sure don’t see the word “liberal” in the definition anyplace. Guess some people don’t actually know what the meaning is…

I hope you follow up on the meth/ filth/ school story and the school bus hit by drunk driver story as diligently as you did on the 3 black males story, so we find out if these white individuals were charged with a crime. I would hate to accuse you of race baiting… so I look forward to your follow up stories on white crime.

    • Race baiting is a term for groundless accusations of racism made by liberals. It is a unique, deliberate and hypocritical focus on race in an attempt to discredit others as “racist”.

      Friday, 30 September 2016, 11:40 pm
      • Exactly like wingnut tried to do. He obviously either is brand new, or he is a race baiter himself. Most stories on this page are about white people….

But that’s not what this page is about…. It is goings-on here in this area. This time it happened to be black folk that did it. Nobody screamed racism when Tom did the story on the meth heads that were white….

        Saturday, 1 October 2016, 9:45 am
    • Then I will simply look forward to your follow up stories on the above referenced crimes, I would hate to accuse you of throwing red meat to any readers who may be racist.

    • The term race-baiting has evolved a lot recently. It no longer refers to the “Willie Horton” type of tactics used in past elections.

Merriam-Webster: the unfair use of statements about race to try to influence the actions or attitudes of a particular group of people a term for groundless accusations of racism made by liberals. Attempting to cloud logic and facts by appealing to emotion through false accusations of racial discrimination. A favorite spin tactic of politicians used to manipulate people of low intelligence.

        • Historically, RNRF will update a story previously reported on by inserting the word “‘update” and a single sentence in the header. The update to the story is then added below the original story.

It is curious that in this case RNRF chose to post a separate story, in light of the racially charged comments on the first story, INCLUDING references to backwoods justice that somehow RNRF found acceptable to post.

          Sunday, 2 October 2016, 2:01 pm
    • What are you talking about ? Tom is ALWAYS reporting on the white trash dirtbags committing crimes in the area. Just scroll down you will see all the ‘white’ stories. Oh and you forgot to mention the other ‘black’ crimes as well…you know the drug dealers, shootings and other mayhem that statistically ‘black’ males commit all over the nation at a higher rate than any other group of people…as can be seen in the greater Tampa Bay area as well. Go look up the stats on and see for yourself. Well, since the stats state that ‘black’ people commit more crime they (the stats) must be racist. Since im pointing all this out, I must be racist and Tom MUST be RACIST also because hes reporting it ? Give us a break social media justice warrior.

      Sunday, 2 October 2016, 7:28 am
  • Maybe the county needs to revisit the no vehicle engagements.i do understand the possible outcomes and danger to public.however if the bad guys are coming to our community because they feel they may get away without a chase who knows what crimes they may come into the county to commit.we were very lucky this time.will we be again once word is out that in Hernando is easier to commit felonies in if you have a fast car.

    Friday, 30 September 2016, 10:21 pm
    • I completely agree with you. I don’t think the no-pursuit policy is right. It should matter based on a couple of factors: weather, pedestrian traffic, vehicle traffic, speed, etc.

  • Nice to see they gave them high bonds.

    Friday, 30 September 2016, 10:11 pm

THANKS for a job well done.
