Three Schools Close Due to Massive Pasco County Wildfire
PASCO – The massive Starkey Park Preserve wildfire has prompted the closing of three schools due to smoky conditions.
Officials say River Ridge Middle, River Ridge High and Cypress Elementary are all closed due to heavy low lying smoke in the area. According to a Facebook post on the Pasco County School Board page, parents were notified by automated message of the closing and that “Those who drop-off students are being advised to return them home for the day. School buses have already delivered bus riders to school, but will return after their elementary runs. The district is determining whether it is feasible to send replacement buses sooner.”
Renee Hicks tells RNRF, “Kids were being treated by EMS on sidewalks for asthma attacks, waiting for rides home. Now they are in the gym waiting on buses to finish routes to come back.”
Firefighters continue to battle the near 2,300-acre blaze but officials say it is nearly 70% contained.
