Touching Surprise as We Care Feeds the Homeless
BROOKSVILLE – There’s a chill in the air and for many Floridians this is the best time of the year to enjoy the outdoors and all the beauty that our state has to offer. But there are hundreds of people who dread the winter months because the drop in temperature means finding shelter and maybe a warm meal now and then.
We Care is a local non-profit organization that helps those in need and for the 3rd year in a row, the group provided free food for the homeless, Sunday, with the help of Luigi’s Pizza on Broad Street.
I met with Sandra Knox, who runs the organization, and she said they provided over 125 meals in just a few short hours. Knox says, “We help local residents who help themselves… A lot of people are single vehicle families. If their car breaks down, they can’t go to work.” We Care helps those people by purchasing the part needed to repair their car. “We’ve even helped people pay a utility bill or drop of meals if they are homebound,” says Knox.
Before meeting with Knox, RNRF received an email from her daughter, Jodie Elliott, who wanted to share a few words about how proud she is of the work her mother is doing for the community.
Elliott wrote in part “I see a woman who had a dream. A woman who at the time couldn’t achieve that dream but a woman who never gave up. I see someone who wakes up every morning, checks her messages for people who may need help, no matter how big or too small. I see a woman who puts together car washes, yard sales, full fills little ones wishes for Christmas, school uniform drives, helps parents in need and volunteers for all kinds of things. I see a woman who stresses over other people’s worries but who also continues to keep a smile on her face.” Elliott went on to say “This amazing woman is my mother. And I’m proud to say that.”
Knox had just read her daughter’s letter moments before our interview and she could barely talk as tears streamed down her face. I asked Knox to share her thoughts about her daughter’s letter; she said, “It was amazing… As a parent you hope that you’re teaching your children well, but you really don’t know. At this time of year, it’s the best present I could get.”
We Care depends on donations from individuals and local business, like Luigi’s Pizza, to continue their efforts in helping the needy. If you would like to help We Care, you can call Sandra Knox at 352-585-8631 and visit them on Facebook by clicking this link: WE CARE FACEBOOK
