Tragic Mistake Leads to Bicyclist’s Death

ZEPHYRHILLS (PASCO) – A tragic mistake claimed the life of an elderly Zephyrhills man Tuesday, after he was run over by a semi-tractor-trailer, while riding his bicycle on Copeland Drive.

According the officials, 71-year-old Michael Basso was traveling southbound, when he attempted to make a right turn onto Chancey Road. At the same time, a Semi-Tractor-Trailer, driven by 56-year-old Arthur Spencer of Spring Hill, was traveling in the same direction. Basso made the unfortunate decision to turn into the path of the trailer, as it was passing by. As a result, Basso was run over by the rear wheels of the trailer and sustained fatal injuries. Basso was pronounced deceased at the scene.

  • Mike Basso was a born-again Christian and loved the Lord all his life. I personally knew him for over 40 years. He had a kind heart and always giving to the community. Originally from New York, he relocated from New Mexico a few months prior to be with his family. He led a Godly and healthy life-style; eating well and exercising. Unfortunately, Florida is not a bike friendly State like he was used to in New Mexico. He is now in Heaven with the Lord. Hopefully his tragic death would make drivers more alert to bikers sharing the same road. Thanks to all for the positive comments and your prayers. It was a great loss for such a wonderful man.

  • I just found out about Mike being the person killed in this crash. He had only been our neighbor a while and was the sweetest man I have met in a long time. He just moved to Florida from up north and had completely reworked his lovely house here in Zephyrhills. I am so sorry for his family. Such a horrible accident.

  • Wow I highly doubt a 71 year old was out joy riding on his bike. We are talking about an elderly man here. Someone always has to pass judgement. Clearly it was an accident not a joy ride. What is wrong with you people. This is probably someone’s grandpa, dad, brother, uncle, dear friend, husband. And that’s what you have to say? This could have been your family member. Many people can lose control of their bike or get spooked by a big semi. Who knows what happened. But it states it was an accident. Im sorry to hear about this tragic death. His family are in my thoughts. As well as the semi driver. His likely going to have to deal with this for a very long time and need some help although it wasnt his fauth. Two families lives have changed.
