“Truck Thief” Former LEO – Arrested Twice in Same Day

SPRING HILL – The man caught stealing his own truck from an auto body repair shop yesterday, is also facing charges in connection with an earlier residential burglary – and to top it off, officials say he is a former law enforcement officer.

According to reports, 33-year-old William Michael Hennessey and his accomplice, 25-year-old Tyler Russell Leone, attempted to steal an air conditioning unit from a residence on Killian street around 3:00 am Tuesday morning.

Deputies responded to the residence, after neighbors reported a suspicious vehicle backed up to the vacant home. Upon arrival, deputies located both suspects and placed them into custody without incident.

During an interview, Leone and Hennessey admitted to the attempted theft; stating they were going to give it to Hennessey’s mom, whose a/c unit had stopped working.

A search of Hennessey’s truck revealed a fully loaded, black Kel Tek 9mm submachine gun lying on the floorboard.

Leone is charged with one count of grand theft and is currently held on a $2,000 bond.

Hennessey posted a $14,500 bond on charges of grand theft, criminal mischief, open carry of a firearm, and possession of burglary tools.

As our original report stated, Hennessey’s truck was towed to a local auto body shop and impounded. After Hennessey bonded out of jail, he returned to the body shop and “repossessed” his pickup truck. CLICK HERE FOR ORIGINAL REPORT

Hennessey’s arrest affidavit stated that he was held without bond; however, that may have already been reduced to $2,000 according to the jail website.

Hennessey’s booking photo has since been removed, due to his former law enforcement employment.

A Spokesperson with the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office says Hennessey did not work for their agency and they are not aware of what agency employed him.

CORRECTION: 8/21/2015, 9:26 AM – RNRF erred in reporting that attempts to steal the air conditioning unit was for Hennessey’s mother. It was actually for Hennessey’s co-defendant, Tyler Leone’s mother.

  • Don’t blame HCSO about the former LEO detail. They probably removed the photo while verifying. Once it was proven to be false it went back up. He should be charged for impersonating an officer for that claim. (although I understand that might not be possible)
